Experience: 2-3 years in high complexity testing in an acute care hospital setting preferred
License: Cytotechnologist (ASCP) or eligible
Certifications: Must obtain annual membership with certification agency
Must-Have: Proficiency in non-GYN and normal GYN screening; at least 2 years of experience
Job Description:
- Follow established standard practices such as preparing and staining microscopic slides from specimens of blood, tissue scrapings, and body fluids.
- Examine cells of the human body to detect evidence of cancer, abnormalities, and other pathological conditions.
- Categorize slides, record classifications, compile listings of patients for follow-up analysis, and report all unusual cell structures or abnormalities to the pathologist.
- Address all daily operations of the cytology laboratory.
- Meet expectations of applicable competencies for self-leadership, leadership of others, or leadership of leaders.
- Enter patient information, orders, and technical information into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Devise and direct the performance of routine and special stains within acceptable turnaround time guidelines to provide appropriate slides for microscopic evaluation of tissues and fluids.
- Operate staining equipment, ThinPrep equipment, coverslippers, and other pathology equipment to provide quality slides for examinations.
- Perform manual stains as needed to ensure quality slides for examinations.
- Assist pathologists with fine needle aspirations.
- Using a microscope and stained slides, identify and mark unusual findings in specimens using accepted morphologic criteria.
- Examine and evaluate cell samples for the presence or absence of normal/abnormal cellular patterns and assess malignant, pre-malignant, inflammatory, and benign changes.
- Refer cellular changes that meet guidelines for supervisor and/or pathologist review.
- Perform quality control and improvement analysis with record-keeping according to policy and procedure following appropriate guidelines and standards.
- Perform established daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoot minor problems and initiate service calls as needed; order and restock supplies/reagents.
- Attend, read, or listen to material from 10-12 in-house educational programs yearly and train new staff in practices.
- Complete tasks or special projects within assigned time frames, as requested by supervisors, managers, or directors.
- Follow protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and use of hazardous materials.
