Job Title: RN First Assistant (RNFA)
Job Specialty: Surgical General
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 06:30-15:00, Monday-Friday
Guaranteed Hours: Full-Time
Experience: At least 5 years of operating room experience, including both scrubbing and circulating. Previous OR experience is required for members of the cardiovascular team.
License: Current Registered Nurse License in the state of employment or compact license.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification
- Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) Certification
Must-Have:
- Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and is accepted by the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI).
Job Description:
- Collaborate with the surgeon and healthcare team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Utilize the nursing process to manage surgical patient care delivery, including assessments, care planning, and evaluations.
- Create and maintain a sterile field utilizing aseptic practice principles; ensure corrective actions for any breaks in technique.
- Demonstrate knowledge of prepping and draping techniques for various procedures.
- Provide surgical equipment and supplies as needed; ensure equipment functions properly and operate per guidelines.
- Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts; ensure accurate documentation and correction of any discrepancies.
- Monitor and maintain environmental safety, including traffic patterns, temperature, and humidity control.
- Administer and document medications in compliance with policy.
- Delegate tasks according to regulations and standards, considering the assignee's competency.
- Participate in teaching associates and patients/families by assessing needs and documenting effectiveness.
- Implement safe patient positioning strategies and demonstrate knowledge of physiological effects.
- Use appropriate sterilization techniques for instruments and supplies; document sterilization parameters accurately.
- Handle specimens accurately according to policy.
- Participate in and document the Universal Protocol/Time-Out process.
- Manage supply inventory accurately and ensure the readiness of instrumentation and supplies.
- Follow safety protocols with high-risk equipment and technology to minimize risks.
- Demonstrate competency in first assistant duties, including instrument use, providing exposure, hemostasis, and suturing.
