Overview of the Position:

The Kennewick School District is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Assistant Superintendent of K-12 Education. Kennewick serves over 19,000 students in 33 schools and learning programs and employs a staff of more than 3,500 people, including 1,320-plus certificated and 1,180-plus classified workers, with an annual budget of approximately $320 million.

The Assistant Superintendent of K-12 Education serves as a member of the superintendent's cabinet, providing executive level direction, support, and oversight of the day-to-day K-12 Education functions of the district. The Assistant Superintendent works alongside, supports, and supervises and evaluates the directors of elementary education, secondary education, student services, special services, and the manager of school safety. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for leading and aligning functions across K-12 departments, building capacity of department leaders, developing systems of support and accountability, and assuming day-to-day duties consistent with those of an assistant superintendent. The successful candidate will begin duties on July 1, 2025.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in educational leadership/education administration and Washington state principal certification.
  • 10+ years of advancing educational leadership experience, with 5+years' experience as a building principal and experience in district-level leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development and personnel management, knowledge and experience with applicable state statutes and federal laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing day-to-day department management and school level oversight, experience in organizational and departmental operations in areas of elementary and secondary education, student services, special services, and school safety.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, public relations, oratory, and presentation skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information relevant to the position, including being able to speak effectively to small and large groups of people, and to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated strong managerial, leadership and strategic planning skills. Ability to articulate the vision and mission for the district and provide appropriate direction, guidance, and management skills to achieve them.
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within a complex, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Ability to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to effectively use typical office applications and computer programs for email, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

  • Duties and Responsibilities:

    Effective Leadership
  • Facilitate the efficient and effective functioning of the K-12 Education department to support the district's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate services provided by the departments within the K-12 department in meeting the goals and targets set forth in the district's strategic plan.
  • Develop a culture of collaboration, support, accountability, and continuous improvement within assigned departments.
  • Develop and build and support the leadership capacity of assigned directors within the K-12 department.
  • Lead and develop systems to build and support the leadership capacity of building principals and administrative interns.
  • Facilitate close communication between assigned departments and schools to ensure clarity of direction and excellent service to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure a safe, healthy, inviting learning and working environment within the K-12 department.
  • Enable and support high quality classroom instruction through organizational excellence.


  • Quality Teaching and Learning Support
  • Serve as a member of the superintendent's cabinet.
  • Provide leadership of department responsibilities of Secondary Education, Elementary Education, Student Services, Special Services, and School Safety.
  • Coordinate activities within the K-12 Education Department and collaborate with Teaching & Learning, Operations, Informational Technology, and Communications.
  • Help to lead and oversee annual building staffing processes.
  • Oversee and monitor school improvement processes including data review and analysis; improvement efforts in curriculum, assessments, and instruction; multi-tiered systems of support; and professional learning communities.
  • Participate in bargaining processes and labor-management sessions as requested/required.
  • Assume responsibility for the interpretation and implementation of Board policy and labor agreements to ensure policies, procedures, and contracts/agreements are appropriately followed in the department and in school buildings.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in K-12 education. Identify best practices and key performance indicators to enhance effectiveness within the department.
  • Develop systems to regularly review and monitor policies, procedures, and practices to ensure continuous alignment and improvement.
  • Utilize data and technology to maximize productivity and efficiency within the K-12 Education department.


  • System-Wide Improvement
  • Ensure district compliance with the applicable federal, state, and local codes, rules, regulations, statutes, and policies.
  • Conduct annual evaluations for all assigned staff.
  • Coordinate the assessment of training needs for personnel in assigned areas.
  • In coordination with Human Resources, provide support for directors and building administrators regarding employee discipline, evaluation, complaints, and investigations.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the district's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and districtwide emergency responses.
  • Assist with the development and updating of Board policies and administrative procedures aligned with areas of responsibility.


  • Communication, Collaboration and Engagement
  • Provide support and assistance to directors and building administrators in addressing parent concerns and complaints.
  • Attend Kennewick School Board meetings and study sessions.
  • Develop appropriate board agenda items pertaining to areas of responsibility, and present information at Board meetings.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of onboarding processes and required training.
  • Develop positive working relationships with K-12 education employees, school personnel, parents, stakeholders, policy makers, community members, contractors, etc.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal and external communications.


  • Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent.

    Contract and Salary Range:

    12 month/260 days including holidays (13) and vacation (25).

    Salary range: $182,000 - $204,000 + longevity incentive (depending on experience).

    Paid health benefits are provided at the same level as those provided to other district employees. Benefits will include all benefits established by the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB).
