Description:

The Position

Genentech, Inc. seeks a Scientist 2 in its South San Francisco, California location.

Duties: Design and plan experimental studies that effectively compare, contrast, and rank order candidate drug molecules, and elucidate critical Pharmacokinetic (PK)/Pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters required to build effective PK/PD models. Design and execute in vivo experiments (i.e., experiments in pre-clinical animal species) by handling, dosing, and performing tissue harvest, using standard dosing techniques to administer candidate drugs, as well as highly specialized dosing techniques to model inhaled drug delivery; and collecting and processing of tissue samples for in vivo measurements and readouts. Perform the above using intravenous (IV); oral gavage (PO, delivering dose directly to the esophagus and stomach of animals); intraperitoneal (injection into the space between organs in the abdomen); intra-nasal/intra-tracheal; subcutaneous (SC/SQ); and other routes of administration. Execute experiments via sterile sample handling and pipetting, while utilizing knowledge of concentrations and dilutions in liquid buffers and formulations, sample processing, and use of commercial kits for DNA/RNA extraction from samples or for detection of specific protein levels in samples. Model inhaled drug delivery with dry or wet aerosols in pre-clinical rodent species. Analyze, interpret, communicate, and document data obtained from completed experiments. Perform analysis of data from the experiments, including calculations, graphing, and statistical analysis. Telecommuting is permitted 10% of the time.

Education and experience required: Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Immunology, biology, cell biology, neuroscience, genetics, biochemistry, or a closely related field and 1 year of experience as Research Assistant, Research Associate, Scientist, or a closely related occupation or related position.

Special Requirements: Must have one year of experience with the following:
  • Routine lab animal handling, in vivo work with preclinical animal models of disease and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD);
  • Rodent dosing standard methods and inhalation specialized dosing (e.g., of allergens, immune stimulants such as bacterial components, or drug candidate molecules) using a subset of standard dosing routes: intravenous, intraperitoneal, oral gavage, and/or subcutaneous;
  • Rodent blood and tissue collection;
  • Experimental design and planning to answer questions for basic research as well as drug development, including appropriate inclusion of controls, realistic assessment of logistical limitations, and coordination of resources and activities across collaborating departments;
  • Downstream processing and analysis of samples obtained from animal experiments, such as pathology techniques (tissue fixation/embedding/sectioning, tissue staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence), biochemistry techniques (western blot, immunoprecipitation, electromobility shift assay), immunological assays (fluorescence activated cell sorting, enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot), in vitro cell assays (cell culture, in vitro cell stimulation, cell-cell interaction), or molecular biology (polymerase chain reaction, real-time-quantitative PCR, DNA/RNA isolation/purification);
  • Analyzing and summarizing data obtained from experiments performed in order to understand, interpret, and share the outcome;
  • Scientific presentation and communication of experimental data to cross-functional audience (e.g., lab, internal and external collaborators, project teams), both verbally and in written forms.
