The MacPhail School of Energy is the only energy school in Canada, and we are charting a new course with a focus on sustainable energy sources and practices. MacPhail School of Energy provides hands-on, industry-guided training in labs that mimic job site environments, giving students the skills needed to find a rewarding career in the energy sector.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Academic Chair will lead activities related to the Electrical Trades portfolio in the MacPhail School of Energy. This Portfolio consists of 4 programs: Electrician, Appliance Service Technician, Electric Motor Systems Technician, and Pre-Employment Electrician. You will collaborate on school and institutional initiatives in connection to SAIT's Strategic Plan and Education Plan, in the areas of program growth, student success, employee engagement, and applied education and partnerships. In addition to leading a team of talented faculty, you will work with a team of laboratory technicians to maintain critical labs. You will also manage key relationships with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, and partners in industry. Additionally, the Academic Chair must lead and support a culture of evidence based continuous improvement.

The Role
    • Lead academic excellence in the areas of teaching, curriculum, credentials, and innovation.
    • Optimize the student experience through management of learner satisfaction, enrollment and other key performance indicators.
    • Support stakeholder and market focus through new program and growth opportunities.
    • Develop, maintain, and grow connections with external and internal stakeholders in, and across SAIT.
    • Ensure that teaching excellence is supported, monitored and measured.
    • Empower faculty members to feel passionate about SAIT, providing ongoing support and coaching including fair/transparent performance management.
    • Manage administration requirements of the program, including budgeting, forecasting, recruiting faculty and students, assigning teaching duties, etc.
    • Ensure consistency in the application of SAIT policy and procedures, collective agreements and work practices.


Qualifications, Certifications or Designations
    • Possess a Journey person certificate in a relevant trade and/or a diploma in a relevant discipline.
    • A master electrician certificate, undergraduate degree, or graduate degree is an asset.
    • Experience in teaching or curriculum design will be given preference.
    • Have a strategic mindset and exceptional critical thinking skills.
    • Highly committed to innovation, employee development and team engagement.
    • Ability to effectively coach and support new and existing instructors, ensuring that teaching environments are optimal for student success.
    • Ability to positively influence and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated leadership and conflict management skills.
    • Excellent project management, analytical and time management skills.
    • Professional and adaptable to organizational policies, initiatives and programs.
    • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
    • Clear understanding of the apprenticeship learning model
    • Competency with respect to the Canadian Electrical Code, and electrical circuits is an asset
    • Can think creatively, strategically and logically
    • Knowledge and experience in higher education is an asset
    • Excellence at forming and nurturing strong relationships
    • An inspirational leader who can lead others through change
    • An open and collaborative mindset
    • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, verbal and written

Salary range: $120,098.48

Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
