The Position
The Yorba Linda Public Library offers an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in serving the community by managing adult and teen services. Under the supervision of the Library Director or Assistant Library Director, supervises, plans, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Adult Services division; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, City departments, outside agencies, and the general public; provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Library Director and/or Assistant Library Director.

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews and supervises the work of Adult Services; recommends selection of staff; trains staff and provides for their professional development; evaluates staff performance.
  • Provides exceptional customer service and handles the most difficult patron complaints; responds to feedback received by email and/or phone in a timely manner; and ensures quality customer service throughout the Adult Services operation.
  • Establishes standards for the adult book collection and other materials and makes final selections; provides assistance to patrons, including teens, parents, and adults, in the effective use of the Library's collection and services; performs readers' advisory work and handles the most difficult reference questions.
  • Develops goals and objectives for Adult Services and monitors progress toward achieving them; assists in developing library policies and procedures and implementing them; prepares statistics and reports for the Director, Library Commission, and/or Friends of the Library; submits and manages assigned budgets.
  • Evaluates program of service to adults and teens; recommends changes that would better meet the needs of the community; guides programming that stimulates knowledge and reading for adults and teens.
  • Establishes and maintains public relations within the community with various groups and organizations; provides outreach services, workshops, and training programs as requested.
  • Serves as a member of the Leadership Team; takes charge of overall building supervision in conjunction with the other division managers; resolves patron problems and complaints; recommends and oversees solutions for various facility issues.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the library's service to its patrons by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team; represents the organization with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public; represents the Library Director at professional and staff meetings and community functions, when necessary, and acts for the Director/Assistant Director in their absence.
  • Collaborates with the graphic designer to market services; assists with community events and encourages staff engagement; composes and edits material for various library publications; plans and implements Library-wide campaigns and special displays.

  • Ability to manage and coordinate the work of professional and para-professional staff; select supervise, train, motivate and evaluate staff.
  • Knowledge of modern library organization, procedures and policies.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of literature and non-print materials for adults as well as materials for other areas of service.
  • Knowledge of and ability to analyze new trends in services to adults such as next generation technology, new reference delivery models, cooperative networking, etc.
  • Ability to analyze community needs and recommend specific plans for modifying or extending library services.
  • Ability to coordinate special projects and programs that relate to improved library service.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and organizing workloads; ability to analyze professional and administrative problems and to take or recommend actions for their solutions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relations with the public and co-workers.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Master's Degree in Library Science and two years of progressively responsible professional experience in a public library, including experience in supervision.

    Physical Requirements

    The physical tasks of this position include sitting at a desk and computer terminal, walking, reaching, lifting, turning and twisting, bending and stooping, pushing and pulling, using small tools. Sitting, standing and walking can each be for sustained periods of time from one to two hours; reaching to shelf height of seven feet; lifting an average of 20 pounds; pushing and pulling objects including carts with a force of up to 60 pounds. Each physical task occurs in variations throughout the day.
    Vision requirements include ability to read books, magazines, and other printed materials; computer screens, signage, etc. Hearing and speaking requirements include ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner over the telephone, person to person with the public and co-workers and to groups.

    Exempt/Non-Exempt
    This is an exempt position. No overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

    Background Check/Physical ExamIndividuals selected for employment will be required to take and pass a background check (fingerprinting) for all positions and medical exam for full time and permanent part time positions. The background check and medical examination are at City expense; and conducted by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City. Candidates who are currently working are urged not to resign until they have successfully passed the background check, physical examination and received a final offer letter.

    Disaster Service Worker
    In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, City of Yorba Linda Employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.
    The City of Yorba Linda believes its management compensation package reflects the "world class" nature of both the organization and the community. The City operates on a "9/80" work schedule and offers the following competitive salary and benefits:

    Retirement: PERS 2% at 55 formula with the employee making a 7% contribution for Classic Members. City also has a Employer Paid Member Contribution of 7%. New PERS enrollees are subject to the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act. The City of Yorba Linda does not participate in Social Security.

    Auto Allowance: $533 per month.

    Cell Phone Allowance: Up to $75 per month.

    Administrative Leave - 100 hours per fiscal year.

    Annual Leave - Management employees accrue annual leave which may be used for sick or vacation purposes.

    Holidays - 13 paid holidays per year.

    Health Insurance: The City provides $2,141.10 per month to purchase health insurance through the CalPERS Health Benefits program and contributes $237.90 per month towards an employee's Retirement Health Savings account. Any unused funds may be cashed out or contributed toward a deferred compensation plan.

    Dental & Vision Insurance: Fully paid indemnity plan for dental and vision insurance.

    Life Insurance: Fully paid life insurance policy equal to annual salary. Additional life insurance may be purchased with the employee paying for the premium.

    Disability Insurance: Fully paid short-term and long-term disability insurance policies.

    Flexible Spending Account: Employees may contribute to a Section 125 Flexible Spending Account on a voluntary basis.

    Deferred Compensation: Employees may contribute to a deferred compensation plan on a voluntary basis (MissionSquare Retirement).

    College Savings Plan - Employees may contribute to a section 529 plan which is designed to encourage saving for future college costs.
