Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by scope of practice guidelines and specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at UI Health and area of expertise. The APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines.The APRN is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at UI Health.Duties & Responsibilities Manage the care of outpatients within assigned area and/or area of expertise and within parameters of medical staff privileges, and evaluate inpatient Hematology/Oncology consult patients in collaboration with UIC faculty members. Obtain relevant patient health history. Study and interpret patient tests and records. Perform physical exam and record findings. Perform various diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic procedures and/or order special screenings and developmental or laboratory tests to diagnose conditions; interpret results. Prescribe/order appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and develop a treatment plan. Develop an educational plan for patient/family. Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services (division, departments) and completion of necessary documentation, scheduling forms and clearance. Order appropriate consultation/referral. Determine effectiveness of treatment plan with documentation of treatment provided and patient outcomes. Reassess and modify plan with patient/family and treatment team within the parameters of medical staff privileges. Participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare disciplines. By being involved in case conferences, serving as a preceptor and mentor, assisting with curriculum development and instruction. Serve as a clinical nursing instructor for assigned Acute Nurse Practitioners. Serve as a clinical instructor in the College of Nursing as a member of an academic department and participate in curriculum development and instruction. Participate in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines by leading case conferences, serving as a preceptor and mentor. Coordinate and lead a journal club and quality or safety initiative by integrating practice and education for both students and staff. Evaluate new patient consults and established patients with hematologic and oncologic diagnoses Provide clinical care and back-up for physicians who are caring for patients entered on clinical trials. Serve as a clinical investigator in the Section of Hematology/Oncology as a member of an academic department and participate in caring for patients on clinical trials. Recommend patients who might be eligible for clinical trial participation. Work closely with faculty, fellows, staff and research nursing personnel to advance the clinical research mission of the Section and the Cancer Center. Serve as a clinical investigator for clinical trials for which patients are entered and participate in the coordination of research efforts of the Section of Hematology/Oncology and the Cancer Center. Provide urgent evaluation of patients receiving anti-cancer therapy in the Hematology/Oncology clinic who have an adverse reaction during treatment. Provide urgent evaluation of patients presenting to the Hematology/Oncology clinic with an acute medical problem. Coordinate and complete peer-to-peer insurance approvals with attending physician. Serve as a clinical instructor and participate in the educational experiences

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
  • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Illinois required.
    A minimum of 2 years' experience as an RN in Internal Medicine or Hematology/Oncology.
