Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking an Applications Scientist to support NASA's Earth Science applied science programs. The candidate will work across the Earth Sciences Division, seeking opportunities to apply basic and applied research and data products toward addressing societal challenges. The role requires an Earth scientist with expertise or demonstrated interest in societal impacts who can advise the Applied Sciences Manager and Division scientists on key areas for applying NASA resources.
The successful candidate must be willing to report to an office in Greenbelt, MD a minimum of three days per week. This hybrid work agreement may change if SSAI or NASA requirements for in-person work change.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Duties include:
- Strengthen the applied sciences portfolio related to environmental health and building societal climate resilience more generally.
- Support and coordinate meetings with various stakeholders on applied research, mission activities, and new initiatives.
- Support the planning and execution of workshops and longer discussions with external partners to increase collaboration with relevant applied science activities. Share notes and reports and follow up on relevant action items.
- Represent Applied Sciences at both domestic and international meetings and be well-versed on the array of NASA Earth Science missions, data, and programmatic activities.
- Publish and present noteworthy activities of applied sciences research and mission activities and prepare briefing materials or reports, when relevant, to share with senior management.
- Work with the Applied Sciences Manager to support new strategic partnerships and initiatives with other domestic and international agencies, non-governmental organizations, and others who can increase the impactful practical use of NASA science and data products.

Required Qualifications:
- Degree in environmental science or related field (MS or PhD preferred) and 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with applied sciences
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, oral presentations made at major science conferences, and/or successful collaboration with various scientific entities and partners
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to facilitate the development of partnerships
- Proven ability to synthesize activities and draw connections across a range of science research, technology, and mission activities
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders to coordinate and advance initiatives
- Proven ability to collaborate and work independently to manage a project within a team
- The ability to work independently and keep the Applied Sciences Manager informed of ongoing and new initiatives that fit within the purview of Goddard Applied Sciences.
- US Citizenship required.
Desired Qualifications:
- While maintaining peer-reviewed research is not a requirement, this candidate may propose research projects that complement the existing portfolio of activities to advance the strategic goals and objectives of NASA, NASA Earth Sciences, and Applied Sciences.
- Experience with NASA Earth science is a plus
- Experience with NASA applied sciences a plus
- Experience supervising employees and/or overseeing the work of a small team
