What You Will Do

The National Security Research Center (NSRC) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks a full-time, onsite archivist to support our Collections Management Team. We are searching for an Archivist (Library Professional 2) experienced in and excited about digital and physical projects.

The NSRC, LANL's classified library, preserves and provides access to classified research and development materials related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons. The NSRC's collections contain technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Create and implement digital preservation plans, engage in digital curation and collection development, and support the Lab's digital collections platform(s).
  • Support and troubleshoot integrated systems, platforms, and current technologies related to digital preservation and AI initiatives.
  • Perform original cataloging, create and standardize metadata for materials in all formats, assist in the creation and maintenance of metadata schemas, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies.
  • Process physical collections (arrangement, description, rehousing, finding aid creation).
  • Lead inventory projects for physical and digital collections.
  • Maintain familiarity with professional best practices through professional development and share professional development opportunities with team members.
  • Participate in internal preservation committees, documentation creation, tracking metrics, and training staff in taxonomy and digital preservation initiatives.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge
Knowledge of both physical and digital archival processing, including best practices for access, organization, and long-term preservation. Experience in maintaining cataloging systems, managing metadata, and utilizing controlled vocabularies to effectively organize and provide access to archival materials is required. Familiarity with metadata standards, file formatting, and data migration processes is essential to ensure efficient information organization and retention across systems. We are looking for a candidate who can readily adapt to new technologies, workflows, and processes in an archival setting and is proactive in staying current with industry advancements and practices. Knowledge of Protg, digital asset management systems, and AI/ML/LLM development within a GLAM setting.
Communication and collaboration
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of complex projects, overseeing them from planning through execution with minimal oversight. Strong communication and collaboration skills, effective in both team-based and solo work environments, and committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace. Ability to train others in dynamic project environments.

Organization and discretion
Strong organizational and research skills to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively. Proven ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in all aspects of archival work.
Education/Experience
Position requires a master's degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Media Encoder
  • Experience with digitization in a GLAM setting
  • Understanding of LANL cultural and technological history
  • Familiarity with command line and Python
  • An American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS degree or similar master's degree with a specialization or focus in archives management, records management, digital archives, or a related degree is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Training/Certifications:
Desire and experience in continued training in library and archive profession related areas.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
