Brunswick County is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Assessor to join the Tax Administration DepartmentThe Assistant Assessor manages the appraisal and revaluation functions for properties in Brunswick County, including all residential, commercial, and special use properties within the county and surrounding municipalities, and is responsible for ensuring all valuations are completed in a timely manner and are fair, equitable, and fall within acceptable ratios that meet North Carolina Department of Revenue guidelines. Work includes:
  • Managing and maintaining an effective modern tax assessment program for Brunswick County.
  • Supervising, training, and hiring a staff of appraisers and appraisal support staff.
  • Leading Chief Appraisers through the appeals process during hearings before the Board of Equalization and Review, and the North Carolina Property Tax Commission.
  • Developing (every four years) the schedule of values for submission to the Brunswick County Board of County Commissioners.
  • Directing the collection of real property data and interfaces with several systems (i.e., addressing, GIS, central permitting, Register of Deeds, etc.).
  • Assisting in the maintenance of the computer assisted mass appraisal software (CAMA) and submitting recommendations for CAMA enhancements as needed.
  • Assisting the Tax Administrator with projecting valuation totals for property values and totals for the County and municipalities.
  • Speaking alongside the Tax Administrator while meeting with diverse groups to explain the revaluation processes, value specifics, and market trends, to gain taxpayer confidence.
  • Leading the team in performing damage assessments during natural disasters; and reporting on damage as appropriate.
  • Preparing progress reports related to the status of current projects.


The Assistant Assessor will also be responsible for taking an active role in performing the day-to-day tasks of the appraisers (including performing appraisals of all property types) as well as demonstrating tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with government officials, taxpayers, developers, attorneys, and the general public. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must. This position reports to the Tax Administrator.
Education and Experience
Certification as a real property appraiser WITH five (5) plus years' experience conducting appraisals and county-wide revaluations AND verified supervisory/management experience; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Valid NC or SC driver license required.
  • Detailed knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act and general accepted rules and procedures of real property appraisal is required.
  • If not currently certified by the North Carolina Department of Revenue as a Property Appraiser, must attain within one year from date of hire and maintain a current active status throughout employment.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, calculators, etc. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
