Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia's only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest dental schools in the United States founded in 1893. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position:

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty member to provide teaching, research, scholarly activities, and patient care.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching:

Faculty members areexpected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includesbaccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Teaching acrosstraditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required.Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informedby interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creativeexpression. This includes teaching at affiliated facilities and supervision ofdental and dental hygiene students and dental residents.

Research:

Participation indepartmental, School of Dentistry, or VCU Health System researchprojects is expected.

Clinical:

Participation in theintramural faculty practice is expected, including hospital-based practice withthe VCU Health System and the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

RequiredQualifications:
  • DDS / DMD degree or foreign equivalent
  • A certificate in pediatric dentistry from an ADA accredited program
  • Eligible or certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
  • Eligible for licensure in Virginia
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to, advocate for, and participate in a humanistic environment of learning
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
  • If tenure eligibility is desired, for an appointment at the rank of the assistant profession, the candidate will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for a scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
  • For an appointment at the rank associate professor, the candidate will be required to have a well-developed scholarly research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prefer a history of clinical practice care, academic teaching, and scholarly activity
