Washington State University (WSU) is seeking an experienced and dedicated professional to serve as the Assistant Chief of Police for its campus police department at the Pullman campus. This is a dynamic leadership position for an individual passionate about campus safety, law enforcement, and fostering community engagement. As the Assistant Chief of Police you will play a key role in managing and directing the operations of the department while supporting the Chief of Police and contributing to the safety and well-being of the WSU community.
The Opportunity:
As the second-in-command you will oversee campus police resources, policy development, personnel management, and training. You will also assist in the preparation of the department's budget and strategic goals, represent the department in external professional organizations, and ensure the implementation and adherence to policies and procedures. Additionally, you will handle special projects, internal investigations, and compliance with safety regulations, including the Clery Act and accreditation processes.
As the Assistant Chief you will be tasked with overseeing all sworn personnel and can have a significant impact on your subordinates and peers, as well as the WSU Pullman Community. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that WSU Pullman is a safe and secure environment for all so you should have the following characteristics to be successful.

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime exempt.
Monthly Salary: $8,342- $12,500 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
- Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and five (5) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience which has included at least two (2) years of management experience. A Master's degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- This position is classified as essential personnel, requiring on-call availability 24/7 to respond to major incidents, emergencies, and urgent notifications. Therefore, the successful candidate must reside within a thirty-minute response time within three months from their date of hire.
- Must conform to requirements for a commissioned police officer in regard to mental requirements, work conditions, physical requirements, and minimum qualifications.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and must be able to pass an Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC)
- Certification as a law enforcement officer in Washington or the ability to attain such certification within the amount of time after appointment as required by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly diverse environment.
- A demonstrated commitment to community outreach and partnerships.
- Strong leadership skills and demonstrated effective supervisory experience in law enforcement.
- Some overnight travel is required for this position. In addition, the incumbent is required to carry a cell phone and be available at all times. The duties of this position require the incumbent to work some evenings and occasional weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Direct experience in managing a collective bargaining agreement.
- Experience working with interagency agreements.
- Experience working with students, cadets and volunteers.
- Completion of an advanced police management training program.
- A commitment to organizational effectiveness established through team-building techniques, innovative and critical development of ideas and solutions, excellent interpersonal skills and mutual trust.
- Demonstrated track record of being politically aware and astute, yet remaining apolitical.
- Direct experience in emergency planning, inter-agency cooperation and planning, and sound fiscal management.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities while establishing realistic deadlines, meeting them, and staying within budget.
