## SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller is a key member of the accounting department leadership team for a multi-company consolidated business. The department supports all aspects of financial and management accounting including treasury, budgeting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, regulatory reporting and compliance, grant accounting, audit, tax and internal controls. An accounting software conversion is expected in the near future. The organization operates in the seafood industry, with profits used for program delivery activities. The accounting team supports both profit-generating enterprises as well as non-profit programs delivery. The organization is highly dynamic with frequent new projects and initiatives. Specific job duties and functional areas of responsibility will be aligned with the successful candidate's prior work experience, knowledge, and strengths; however, payroll oversight will be assigned to this role. The position is hybrid remote/in-office, with minimum weekly in-office days required. Location: Downtown Anchorage.
## PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
### General Leadership
- Primary responsibility is to support the controller in achieving departmental success: Competency, Reliability, Accuracy, Timeliness, Responsiveness, and Job Satisfaction within the team
- This position requires someone who can think critically and creatively to identify, solve, and prevent accounting and reporting errors
### Accounting and Reporting
In cooperation with the Controller, the assistant controller will assist with:
- Oversight of all areas of accounting, including manufacturing and inventory, sales, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and/or grant accounting, budgeting, and analysis
- Assist in the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements for internal and external users
- Assist in the preparation of operations production and activity reporting
- Review and manage the GL, including the review and verification of substantial and/or irregular entries
- Preparation and review of various account reconciliations
- Preparation of workpapers and documentation for the annual external audit and tax returns
- Preparation and filing of business tax returns (Sales tax, state B&O, Property taxes, etc.)
- Assist with implementation of new accounting pronouncements including development of new procedures for GAAP compliance
- Assist in developing and improving processes and internal controls in a dynamic setting
### Payroll Management
Payroll is HIGHLY COMPLEX with multiple pay structures and deadlines. Paylocity is the HRIS and payroll processing Platform. This section has 2 staff plus 2 managers. The assistant controller provides supervision, review and guidance of:
- Accurate and timely payroll processing and related activities
- All aspects of payroll accounting including GL entries and reconciliations
- Payroll tax filings, W-2s, and other regulatory reporting
- Workers comp and other payroll related audit information
- Employee and manager support for payroll matters
- System configuration and procedures oversight in cooperation with HR
### Personnel Supervision and Development
- Assist in management of accounting staff, including daily supervision and performance evaluations
- Assist in training and development of department staff
- Maintenance of job descriptions and hiring processes for the finance team
- Cross-departmental coordination and customer service
## KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS
### Required
- Bachelor's degree in accounting
- Minimum five years' experience in accounting with direct supervisory experience
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Solid understanding of payroll accounting
- Experience with both GL work and subledger work
- Ability to learn quickly and teach others
- Professional demeanor with excellent communication skills
- High attention to detail and organizational skills
- Problem-solving abilities and adaptability
### Preferred
- Public accounting experience and CPA license (Promotion opportunity will require CPA license)
- Solid understanding of ASC and GAAP
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains
- Experience with accounting systems conversion
- Direct experience with HRIS/Payroll systems in complex environments
- Prior experience with Paylocity
### Other Helpful Experience
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting
- Manufacturing accounting experience
- Working knowledge of Federal Single Audit rules and grant accounting
- Proficiency with various software systems
## PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
