Description
Under general supervision, performs routine to difficult professional legal work involved in the preparation for and handling of cases before courts and tribunals, and in the preparation of legal opinions.
Examples of Duties
- Performs research in preparation for trials and hearings and in the resolution and clarification of legal issues and problems.
- Prepares for and/or tries a wide variety of cases which range from relatively simple to difficult and are characterized by somewhat complex legal questions which have generally been settled by prior court action, but which may involve impact on the public or on the City fiscal or administrative structure; such cases generally relate to ordinance violations, foreclosure or condemnation of property, personal injury and property damage claims, Workers' Compensation cases, tax cases, litigation relative to Federal or State Governmental Agencies and public utilities, and handles, prepares and litigate employment matter of labor issues.
- Prepares legal opinions on simple to moderately complex matters.
- Prepares and carries through simple to moderately complex appeals to higher courts and tribunals.
- Draft contracts and agreements.
- Reviews and approves, as to sufficiency of content and legal forms, contracts and legal agreements entered into by the various City departments.
- Prepares ordinances and legislative bills.
- Serves as a lead person for other attorneys upon attainment of required skills, when required.
Minimum Qualifications

- Juris Doctorate degree from an American Bar Association approved institution.
- One year of experience in the practice of law including experience in the trial and argument of cases before courts or quasi-judicial bodies.
