JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Dean of Assessment and Evaluation (AE) is a full-time, non-tenure track core faculty position for the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine School of Medicine (SOM) within the Department of Medical Education, reporting to Associate Dean, Undergrad Medical Education.

The Assistant Dean of Assessment and Evaluation provides strategic leadership in the development, oversight, and implementation of assessment and evaluation for the undergraduate medical education program leading to the MD degree. This role serves as an expert resource on measurement, program accreditation requirements, and the criteria for assessing student learning outcomes. The Assistant Dean of Assessment and Evaluation focuses and identifies effective assessment strategies and instruments, as well as utilizing assessment results to enhance academic programs.

The Assistant Dean of Assessment and Evaluation acts as a resource and collaborator to foster scholarship among the medical school faculty. This role involves providing skill-building seminars and workshops to support the best practices in learner assessment and program metrics. Additionally, Assistant Dean will contribute to strategic planning and policy development aimed at enhancing the overall quality of the medical education program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develops and implements strategic plans for assessment and evaluation in alignment with the medical school's goals and objectives.
    • Provides leadership in the continuous improvement of assessment and evaluation processes to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality.
    • Collaborates with senior leadership to integrate assessment and evaluation data into strategic decision-making processes.
  • Curriculum and Program Development:
    • Assists in developing measurable learning outcomes for the curriculum, courses, and the medical school's goals.
    • Leads efforts in curricular mapping within the School of Medicine (SOM).
    • Provides statistical support and analysis of assessment and evaluation data, such as thematic analysis of narrative evaluations.
  • Research and Scholarship:
    • Serves as a subject matter expert in current assessment practices and research methods.
    • Supports the assessment and evaluation instrument development process, including, but not limited to, the development of tests, surveys, observation protocols, interview focus group questionnaires, scoring rubrics, and simulation activities.
    • Leads the selection of research designs, interpretation, and analysis of data related to assessment and evaluation.
  • Accreditation and Compliance:
    • Provides data for accreditation reports for the LCME and other accrediting agencies.
    • Works collaboratively and closely with the Accreditation Office to provide assessment and evaluation data required for continuous quality improvement efforts within the SOM.
    • Develops processes, policies, and procedures as necessary to ensure compliance and that standards are exceeding national accreditation requirements in all aspects of assessment and evaluation.
  • Faculty Development:
    • Maintains and improves competence in disciplinary content and methodologies through participation in faculty development activities and self-directed learning.
    • Ensures all policies related to assessment and evaluation are up to date.
    • Provides the faculty with skill-building seminars/workshops to support best practices in learner assessment and programmatic metrics.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Participates in committees and other administrative duties as assigned.


ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Extensive background and experience in medical education, including assessment and evaluation.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement new programs.
  • Knowledge and experience in budget creation and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide servant leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities.
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.


Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Terminal degree, i.e., MD, DO, EdD, or Ph.D. is required.
  • Five (5) years of experience in assessment and evaluation and medical education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience in a leadership role, preferably in assessment and evaluation.
  • Eligible for appointment at rank of Associate or Full Professor, non-tenure.
  • May accept a combination of education and experience.
