Position Summary:

The Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking an outstanding faculty member to join the leadership team as the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME). This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and quality of resident and fellow training programs, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, facilitating curriculum development, monitoring resident and fellow progress, and collaborating with faculty to provide a high-quality learning environment. The Assistant Dean works closely with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), hospital partners, program directors, and institutional leadership to advance the College's mission of training highly competent physicians.

This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for GME/DIO for roles related to GME administration and to the Clinical Chair, as applicable by specialty, for clinical responsibilities. The Assistant Dean will be a principal leader for promoting the graduate medical education mission of the medical school and for achieving the vision of being a leader in graduate medical education through innovation and scholarship.

Candidates must possess a doctorate in medicine with current board certification from an ABMS board, a demonstrated track record of leadership in graduate medical education, preferably with experience as a program director or associate program director of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program, and the ability to articulate a vision for the future of graduate medical education. Candidates must possess board certification and a strong clinical reputation within their specialty. They will be expected to work clinically in their boarded specialty with one or more of our hospital partners.

The Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education has the following primary responsibilities, but not limited to:

Accreditation & Compliance
  • Monitor adherence to the standards and guidelines of all residency and fellowship programs and compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison between the College of Medicine, hospital affiliates, accrediting bodies, and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with the DIO to prepare and manage accreditation reviews of resident and fellowship programs, GME accreditation site visits, internal reviews, and reporting requirements.


Program Development & Strategic Growth
  • Collaborate with departmental chairs and program directors to contribute to the strategic expansion of GME programs, aligning with workforce needs and institutional priorities.
  • Work with hospital partners and faculty to develop new residency and fellowship programs as approved by the Dean, Vice Dean for Medical Education, and DIO.
  • Support program directors in curriculum innovation, competency-based training, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) COM leaders to identify opportunities to enhance the transition and continuum of UME to GME.


Resident & Faculty Support
  • Develop initiatives to enhance resident wellness, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Oversee faculty development programs to strengthen teaching, mentorship, and leadership in GME.
  • Address resident concerns, remediation plans, and conflict resolution in collaboration with the DIO and medical education leadership team.
  • Facilitate resident and fellow career development through mentorship and guidance.


Institutional Collaboration & Partnerships
  • Work with the Dean's Office, Vice Dean for Medical Education, DIO, and hospital leadership to align GME initiatives with the College's strategic plan and those of our clinical partner institutions.
  • Serve as a representative of the College of Medicine in regional and national GME forums.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments to secure funding, grants, and resources to enhance GME programs.


Data-Driven Decision-Making & Quality Improvement
  • Utilize GME performance metrics, program evaluations, and accreditation reports to drive continuous improvement.
  • Monitor trends in medical education and implement best practices in residency and fellowship training.
  • Oversee the development of policies and procedures that support excellence in GME.

Minimum Qualifications:
MD or DO degree from an LCME accredited institution and the credentials that merit the appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor.
Board certification in an ABMS accredited primary specialty
A Florida medical license or eligibility for Florida licensure is preferred. Board certification is required.
Minimum three years of experience in GME leadership, such as a program director, associate program director, or institutional leadership role.
Demonstrated knowledge of ACGME accreditation, medical education policies, and regulatory requirements.
Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational leadership skills are required.
Scholarship in medical education is desirable.

Preferred:
Experience in new program development and hospital partnerships.
Experience with faculty development, quality improvement, and data analysis in medical education.
