The Chesterfield Community Engagement and Resources Department is seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to serve as the Assistant Director. This role requires a proven leader who can provide strategic oversight and direction for community programs, initiatives, and events. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director to ensure the successful implementation of community engagement strategies that are collaborative, strengths-based, and solution-focused.
What You Do and How You Do It:
The Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Resources, working with limited supervision, is responsible for managing complex tasks related to information and referral services, advocacy for community engagement, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. The role involves coordinating and overseeing the execution of programs, initiatives, and events in collaboration with non-profits, community engagement teams, mobility services, and resources for senior and the disabled. This position will also work with the team in the areas of multicultural, youth, and volunteerism engagement.
In this position, the candidate will provide leadership and direction for daily operations, supervising staff, and guiding the development and implementation of community engagement strategies and special events. The role will also require fostering involvement from community members, county agencies, workforce development, and not-for-profit organizations to promote access to resources and generate solutions for emerging community issues.
Additionally, the Assistant Director will manage program budgets and monitor expenditures. They will develop strategies to enhance community engagement, ensuring that organizations remain informed about resources, organizational successes, challenges, and opportunities. Perform other work as required.

Here's What You Need:
- Minimum of bachelor's degree in the human services field and human services program experience, in a supervisory capacity.
- Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, communications, or a related field preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in civic and community engagement, youth development, multicultural community and volunteerism engagement.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of administrative management, business, and management principles.
We are Looking for Ideal Candidates Who Have:
- Ability to assess, analyze, and research problems encountered within the community and be able to recommend alternative solutions.
- Ability to participate in the development and administration of department goals, objectives, and procedures.
- Ability to identify and define problems, evaluate data, make recommendations, and develop/implement a plan of action.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to community engagement programs.
- Coordinate and oversee the implementation of programs, initiatives, and community engagement events.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, executives, senior leadership, residents, businesses, and diverse populations.
- Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
- Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
