Job Summary
The Assistant Director of the Gifted Program coordinates gifted student identification and develops and implements gifted curriculum and identifies and coordinates appropriate professional development for employees supporting the Gifted Program. The assistant director also provides administrative leadership and supervision for teaching staff. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in education or a related area.
  • A current Alaska teaching certificate by start date.
  • A current Alaska type B administrative certificate within two years of start date. Must verify enrollment in a program no later than 60 days after the start date.
  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience.
  • Competency in curriculum development, budgeting, and evaluation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.

  • The following are preferred:
  • Prior administrative experience and knowledge of gifted education.
  • Ability to effectively direct and supervise assigned staff.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership with respect to professional development.
  • Knowledge of legislation related to gifted programs.

  • Essential Job Functions
  • Provides administrative leadership and supervision for assigned teaching staff.
  • Coordinates gifted student identification and selection processes for the program.
  • Coordinates, develops, and implements curriculum and program models.
  • Maintains program enrollment through the child-find process.
  • Develops and coordinates in-services for principals, teachers of the gifted, and classroom teachers.
  • Serves as liaison to teachers, administrators, ASD, and the community by providing information concerning the development and operation of the gifted program.
  • Develops program budget and manages expenditure of funds.
  • Facilitates design, data gathering, and interpretation of program evaluation activities.
  • Searches for and utilizes information concerning material for gifted students, model programs, and experts in the field as an aide to maintaining program quality.

  • Physical /Mental Demands
    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

    Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

    While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
