Assistant Director, Nursing Inpatient Unit(s)/Interventional Psychiatry

The Assistant Director, Nursing Inpatient Unit(s) is responsible for optimizing daily operations to provide excellent nursing care. This is done through two primary pathways. First, developing staff capability and confidence in providing collaborative, effective, evidence-based, tailored nursing care. Second, creating and maintaining structures and processes to support effective, efficient and cost-effective care. The Assistant Director, Nursing Inpatient Unit(s)

  • provides, in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Nursing Nights, and adjusts staffing, scheduling, equipment, materials and budget to meet patient and staff needs,

  • supports staff in their professional growth, especially as it increases critical thinking and decision-making skill.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assure the assigned unit(s) operates smoothly supporting exceptional nursing practice.
  • Manage Clinical Rounds (on the units with nursing staff and in Rounds with the Clinical Team) with a specific purpose to raise the level of professional practice and build a culture of expectation of excellence, autonomy, and accountability.
  • Translate evidence-based research into practice through short-term, time-limited Evidence-based Practice Initiatives. Coach and mentor staff to select an initiative of particular interest that meets an important patient need.
  • Support, coach and mentor staff as they develop skills for self-governance.
  • Assure a professional development plan for each staff member of the assigned unit(s).
  • Provide an end-year evaluation of professional development; the official competency-based evaluation.
  • Recognize and celebrate staff for excellent performance throughout the year.
  • Provide a disciplinary process, when required, consulting with Human Resources and Nursing leadership. Assure a just process with an emphasis on a performance improvement plan that is very specific and measurable, agreed to by the employee.
  • Prepare and defend both a capital and operational budget for the assigned unit(s), adjusting as required to meet organizational needs.
  • Evaluate, in collaboration with Assistant Director, Nursing Nights, staffing levels using Qgenda reports, anticipating cycles of increased or decreased need for staff.
  • Advocate for recruitment of staff, use of overtime, use of per diem as required to meet fluctuations in patient care requirements. Participate in recruitment efforts, resume reviews and interviews of potential staff.
  • Create and maintain, in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Nursing Nights the staff schedule.
  • Evaluate unit(s) structures and processes through analytics (e.g., gap analysis, SWOT, etc.) if change is necessary.
  • Support use of change models, e.g., Kotter, Lewin and other tools for change, e.g., PDSA, LEAN.
  • For the Staffing Council, participate and provide mentoring and coaching of staff as they grow towards self-governance.
  • Perform other job duties as necessary.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelors degree in nursing
  • Masters in nursing or active participation towards completion of Masters program

Professional Certification
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut
  • Certification in Substance abuse disorders or Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
  • Certification or active progress towards certification in one of the following:
  • ANCC Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC)
  • AONL Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML)
  • American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL)

Experience
  • At least 5 years experience as a psychiatric nurse preferred
  • At least 5 years experience in supervision or management
  • Experience with inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse disorder patient populations
  • Experience in management of psychiatric and/or substance abuse inpatient unit

Schedule

Monday through Friday.

Adjusts hours when needs necessitate.

Direct Reports

Assigned unit - nurses, psychiatric technicians, unit clerks.
