TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 12-month, tenure track, district-level administrative assignment.

This position assists the Executive Director in coordinating and partnering with districts, families and outside agencies, and in providing support to building principals in the areas of CSE meetings, programs and related services, IEP development and implementation, manifestation hearings, student intakes and K-12 professional development opportunities

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Alternative Education and Special Education

SUPERVISES: Special Education Coordinators, faculty, and staff in the student services division.

QUALIFICATIONS,
EXPERIENCE AND
COMPETENCIES:
1. NYS certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District
Leader (SDL) is required.
2. NYS Certification in Special Education or related service is required.
3. Minimum of three years of successful leadership experience in the area of
special education at the school or District level is required.
4. Strong communication, problem solving, and human relation skills.

DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Administration/Management
  • Provide leadership and supervision to student services programs at Dutchess BOCES, under the direction of the Executive Director
  • Exercise sound judgment and appropriate discretion in the administration of professional duties.
  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of laws and regulations related to the fiscal and programmatic implementation of special education programs.
  • Chair/facilitate district-level committees as requested or assigned by the Executive Director, Deputy Superintendent, or District Superintendent
  • Serve on district and building-level committees as requested or assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management team, faculty and staff, students and families, component districts, community partners, and the Board of Trustees.
  • Serve as both a liaison and resource to component districts and community service partners.
  • Perform other administrative and/or supervisory duties as assigned by the superintendent.
  • Demonstrate ability to assess and address academic and behavioral strategies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Federal IDEA, and New York's Part 200 Special Education Regulations


  • Program Administration
  • Provides guidance and support to school administrators, and direction to staff, regarding the implementation of federal and state regulations, and division policies related to students with disabilities; and ensures accountability for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains accountability for processes to ensure prompt and responsive communication with parents, districts, and community stakeholders.
  • Provides leadership and support for Special Education Coordinators within the Office of Alternative Education and Special Education as directed.
  • Serves as the designee for the Executive Director of Alternative Education and Special Education as assigned.
  • Assists in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, appraising, and supervising and evaluating faculty and staff.
  • Prepares and oversees various agency required program reports in tandem with the Executive Director.
  • Helps oversee classroom placements and curriculum design.
  • Assist the Executive Director in planning and delivering professional development
  • Provides coverage for building Principals as needed
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify new practices, programs, develop creative proposals and solutions for improving services
  • Suggests and helps develop and implement program goals.
  • Works directly with administrators and teachers on implementing goals, behavior plans, and curriculum
  • Works directly with selected classrooms on IEP writing, documentation skills, classroom management.

  • EVALUATION: The Assistant Director's performance will be evaluated annually by the Deputy
    Superintendent of schools.
