SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under general direction of the Executive Director of Inclusive Education, the Assistant Director of Inclusive Education shall be responsible for the leadership and implementation of comprehensive instructional initiatives for students with disabilities ranging from 3-22 years of age, assist with directing the District's School Psychological Services, all related services, and Section 504. The role of the Assistant Director of Inclusive Education is to be an educational leader and advocate for students with disabilities within the school setting. He/she will actively support all DCSD school(s) to ensure that a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement of students with disabilities is evident. This position provides customer service for Inclusive Education, including but not limited to the design and implementation of specially designed instruction, effective instructional strategies, and behavioral supports. This position will share responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and the Family Rights and Privacy Act. A strong understanding of state and federal laws that pertain to special education is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Designs, trains, and supports site administrators to review academic, behavioral, Individualized Educational Program (IEP), and other relevant data of students with disabilities to maintain Compliance with IDEA.

Partners with all Directors to meet the needs of schools and to ensure that necessary training, support and services continue to be provided specifically related to procedural safeguards, IEP implementation, and compliance.

Participates in the development and administration of the department/program budget; assist with the forecasting of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures.

Develops, leads and supports the design and implementation of specially designed instruction, effective instructional strategies, and behavioral supports.

Designs, coordinates, and implements professional development and support for all special education programs, including but not limited to Comprehensive Life Skills, Early Childhood, Resource, Child Find, Home Bound, and Extended School Year.

Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints.

Assists with the implementation and supervision of extended school year (ESY) and Special Education pre-school programs.

Works collaboratively with Special Services Director to develop and implement projects and reports, project fiscal areas of need and responsibility, and ensure compliance with state and federal laws.

Assists in the selection of school psychologists, district-wide special education staff, and other designated related service providers.

Actively promotes community and parent awareness of academic programs, initiatives, and opportunities for students and parents in support of the DCSD's vision, goals, and objectives.

Works closely with the Director of Special Services in procedural safeguard issues and due process concerning the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504, and Special Student Populations.

Serves as member of the District's Leadership Team, Elementary and Secondary Implementation Task Forces, Principals' meetings, and participate in its deliberations.

Manages and directs various projects, data collection, and documentation for Special Services.

Participates in IEP meetings; meet with district office staff, administrators, parents, and other agency representatives in acquiring information and coordinating special services and related program services.

Supervises and coordinates the evaluation of students referred for evaluation as part of the special education referral process.

Supervises and evaluates assigned staff.

Advocates for students with disabilities.

Keeps informed on the latest research, trends, and developments in all areas of education, specifically programs related to special education and related services.

Performs other duties related to the position, as assigned.

Frequent contact with teachers, students, parents, district staff, and state personnel is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of modern and highly complex principles and practices of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, Second Language Acquisition, Grants and Fiscal Management, and Nevada School Law; Organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies, and operational needs; Advanced principles and practices of special education, curriculum, and/or assessment; Methods, materials and techniques employed in the administration of a Special Education Program; Consequences and constraints related to special education laws, rules and regulations; Research methods and sources of information related to special education; modern principles and practices of supervision and evaluations.

Plan, organize, and coordinate activities/professional development for all special services staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Executive Director of Inclusive Education, who will annually evaluate the performance of the Assistant Director of Inclusive Education and Support Programs. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports relating to accomplishment of board program objectives and the effectiveness of service delivery.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directly supervises and evaluate assigned Inclusive Education District Level Staff and consultants.

CONDITIONS OF WORK
Work is performed under the following conditions:

  • Exposure to climate-controlled office settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat.May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods.May involve work in crowded environments.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. Master's degree in School Administration or related field.
2. A minimum of five (5) years special education classroom teaching or related experience.
3. Preferably, a minimum of one (1) year Administrative experience.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada driver's license is required; a valid Nevada teaching license; Nevada School Administrator Endorsement, and Nevada Special Education license. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL/INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS
