GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The District Attorney's Office of Laramie County is seeking highly motivated, organized, and professional applicants for an Assistant District Attorney. The experienced attorney in this position handles the prosecution of a variety of misdemeanor and felony-level offenses that arise in Laramie County. This work includes: preparing a variety of court documents and legal memoranda, arguing motions before the trial court, conducting jury and bench trials, and conferring with investigative agencies. This attorney will maintain contact with victims of crime; coordinate investigations with law enforcement agencies through all stages of the case; and direct the work of the assigned legal assistant and other support staff. This position will also perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the Laramie County District Attorney's Office.

Candidates must currently be licensed to practice in Wyoming and be in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar. Preference may be given to applicants with 7+ years of relevant experience including but not limited to, criminal prosecution, criminal defense, and criminal appeals. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Initiates prosecution of individuals for felony and misdemeanor criminal offenses for Laramie County by filing criminal charges.
  • Handles a trial caseload of complex legal matters.
  • Follows through the judicial system until the case is resolved; works with law enforcement officers and agencies to ensure that all offense elements have been investigated and ensures that the defendant's rights are not violated.
  • Reviews investigative reports.
  • Monitors cases through the court system.
  • Confers and negotiates with defense attorneys on pending cases, using communication and persuasive skills to achieve a fair resolution of the case.
  • Meets and confers with crime victims to ensure their rights are observed and that they have an opportunity to participate in the criminal justice system.
  • Collects facts and interviews people in preparation for jury trials.
  • Confers with other attorneys in the office to determine the status of the case, providing necessary guidance or approval of case disposition.
  • Performs complex or novel special assignments from the District Attorney.
  • Constantly exercises considerable legal reasoning and judgment with minimal supervision in all legal matters.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring for all attorneys.
  • Consult on strategy regarding complex or high-profile cases.
  • Conducts in-house training for all attorneys.
  • Team leader for litigation teams in complex cases.
  • Occasionally perform administrative assignments under the direction of the District Attorney.


Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants with 7+ years of relevant legal experience, including but not limited to, criminal prosecution, criminal defense, and criminal appeals. Candidates must be Licensed to practice law in Wyoming and be a member in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar, or have the ability to be such status by the date of hire.

  • Knowledge of the rules of criminal procedure.
  • Skill in organization.

7+ years of relevant legal experience
