The Assistant Editor - Hub will work to produce strong breaking news and enterprise coverage across Newsday's digital and print platforms and will edit copy to Newsday's high standards for grammar, style and structure. The primary role is backreading the work of other editors and confidently improving copy and headlines for Newsday.com; the secondary role is sometimes directing the work of breaking news reporters. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills to work with general assignment, towns and beat reporters and editors while coordinating with departments across the newsroom, including digital, Newsday TV, social media, photo, design and copy desk teams.

Essential Duties & Functions
  • This editor will be a confident, top-notch copy editor who understands grammar, style and headline writing and refuses to let a typo slip by.
  • Will be adept at spotting news, arranging coverage and getting a story posted quickly and accurately, then responsibly updating as needed to give readers what they need to know in the moment.
  • Will help build diverse audiences, monitor metrics and use the data to inform coverage that serves our loyal subscribers and attracts new subscribers.
  • Will be adept at shaping story ideas with creative front-end editing, embracing alternative story-telling methods including video and social media.


Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
  • Prior experience at a news organization preferred
  • Must possess strong judgment and editing skills, both copy editing and content editing.
  • Understanding of headline writing, including the roles of SEO-driven headlines and engaging website section-front headlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Ability to ask big-picture questions as well as confidently sweat the details.
  • Demonstrated ability to edit and post copy quickly, and accurately, for all Newsday platforms, meet tight deadlines, juggle more than one story at a time and understand the importance of data-driven reporting.
  • Comfortable and proficient using social media, smartphone photo and video and other media platforms to help reporters report and tell stories.
  • Ability to coach and edit in an engaging manner is essential.
  • Flexibility to handle different types of editing tasks on any given day - stories, video scripts, graphics, etc. Experience using Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and build a rapport with others.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments simultaneously while meeting aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to included extended hours (early morning and evenings), weekends and holidays as needed to support newsroom needs.


Physical Requirements
  • This is a hybrid position. Employees are generally required to work in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week.


COMPENSATION
  • The hourly range for this position is $36.19 to $54.44, commensurate with experience.
  • This position is represented by the Graphics Communication Conference, PPPWU.
