Central OfficeThe Danbury Public Schools provides educational services to more than 12,500 students in this diverse City. The Chief Finance Officer is responsible for overseeing an overall general fund operating budget of $160 million with additional grant based funding. In addition to the budgeting and financial oversight function, the Finance Office oversees Payroll, Accounts Receivable, School Lunch, Transportation and Sites and Facilities. The Assistant Finance Director serves in a critical support role to the CFO, with varying degrees of responsibility across multiple areas, focused on fiscal responsibilities, including annual budget preparation, finance office operations, general accounting and accounts receivable.
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Chief Finance Officer

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning, Budget and Forecasting
  • Prepares financial information in preparation for District's annual budget.
  • Systematically tracks expenditures and encumbrances.
  • Assists in the financial oversight of individual school-based expenditures.
  • Monitors weekly and annual cost estimates for all medical expenditures under the District's self-insured Health and Welfare Benefits Plan, working in close collaboration with the Coordinator of Benefits, designated insurance consultants, and the benefits providers.
  • Oversees the management of all grants, in close collaboration with the Grant Coordinator.

  • Financial Reporting
  • Prepare departmental financial statements.
  • Produce quarterly/annual filings and public reports, including the state EFS and audit information for the City.
  • Works closely with external auditors as directed

  • General Accounting
  • Oversees the day-to day accounting operations, including supervision of the payroll and accounts payable coordinators.
  • Prepares journal entries.
  • Performs bank reconciliations.
  • Reconciles general ledger accounts.
  • Prepares general fund bank deposits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Knowledge of and experience in school or municipal finance strongly preferred.
    • Bachelor's Degree with concentration in related area (Accounting, Finance, Business) or equivalent preferred.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in accounting or business position with demonstrated independent responsibility.
    • Strong aptitude for computer/data processing, experience with large student and/or financial database management.
    • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    Terms and Conditions of Employment
    This is a non-union, exempt, full time position with a full 12-month work year.
    Annual salary $115,00 - $135,000 negotiable based upon experience and qualifications. Complete access to all health and welfare benefits package. Eligibility to participate in the City of Danbury Pension Plan with designated contribution.
