QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Five (5) years of relevant experience navigating legal issues related to music licensing and rights management/administration.
- Strong experience building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders; supporting complex needs.
- Must be able to think strategically while grasping and executing complicated details.
- Experience working with legal frameworks within a regulatory environment and operationalizing details is strongly preferred.
- Experience creating processes in ambiguous situations with strong communication skills is strongly preferred.
- Experience navigating royalty audits as both auditor and auditee is preferred.
- Experience vetting and selecting vendors and consultants for business projects is preferred.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
DEVELOP & EXECUTE STRATEGIC INITIATIVES BY:
- Providing guidance regarding the scope of the blanket license and the definition of covered activities under section 115 of the Copyright Act; including implementing regulations in specific and/or unprecedented scenarios.
- Creating & executing internal strategies & processes; anticipating bottlenecks, assessing risks, mitigating issues, & developing protocols for escalation.
- Working closely with Technology and Data teams to track KPIs to support data-driven recommendations.
- Creating and executing strategies for detecting & preventing fraudulent activity.
SUPPORT THE ROYALTY DISTRIBUTION PROCESS BY:
- Regularly attending distribution meetings and providing general/legal perspectives as necessary; including assisting in the interpretation of regulations for royalty calculation purposes, participating in rate and royalty reviews and assisting the Operations team in the preparation of documents and DSP-related information for Members.
- Advising the Finance & Technology teams on the appropriateness of pre-legal escalations for DSPs.
- Compiling a monthly summary of DSP compliance-related information for internal groups.
REPRESENT THE MLC BY:
- Building and maintaining trust with external stakeholders; particularly Digital Service Providers (DSPs).
- Resolving complicated issues with DSPs using a collaborative approach that aligns solutions with regulatory requirements and business interests and at the same time, documenting solutions and context. Partner with other MLC teams to create & maintain processes & documents to address DSP issues effectively and efficiently.
- Serve and participant on industry panels as requested.
- Collaborate with Marketing and Outreach to create and deliver educational presentations at conferences and/or with national/local organizations.
