Job Description

San Bernardino Valley College is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution with a majority of our students identifying themselves as either African-American/Black or Latinx. At the heart of the Inland Empire, SBVC is a driving factor to improve the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. We are seeking individuals to join our Child Development department that are fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education in a collegial and collaborative student-centered environment.

This posting is to fill one (1) full-time, tenure track position teaching in the Child Development department.

Summary Description:
Under the direction of the Dean of Social Sciences, Human Development, and Kinesiology & Health, the faculty member will: teach a full contract load of courses in the department of Child Development, participate in curriculum development, serve on division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional programs, and participate in appropriate professional development and other divisional activities. Faculty positions may require work to be performed during evenings and/or weekends.

Examples of Duties:

  • Teach courses in child development
  • Mentor and teach a diverse student population in face-to-face, online, and hybrid modalities
  • Prepare and evaluate all class assignment and examinations
  • Maintain and submit accurate student records in a timely manner
  • Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
  • Participate in college professional or shared governance committees and in departmental activities such as maintaining course outlines, program review, accreditation, other curricular development, etc
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, Division, and Department policies
  • Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications
    Master's in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/ family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education

    OR
    Bachelor's in any of the above

    AND
    Master's in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies

    OR the equivalent.

    Desired Qualifications
  • A minimum of three (3) full years teaching experience at the community college level
  • 2 years experience working in an early childhood center
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, college administration, intercollegiate athletic coaches and various on campus and off-campus constituencies.

Transcripts from outside the US must include an official evaluation for equivalency. Copies of diplomas will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts if the position requires a degree.     CASH IN LIEU BENEFIT
    The district offers a taxable $250 monthly stipend to a benefits eligible employee who waives medical coverage under SBCCD's group plan because that employee has other group coverage (e.g., a spouse's plan, parents' plan, or other employer's plan).

    LIFE INSURANCE
    Term Life and Accidental, Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance - The district provides a $50,000 basic term life insurance policy and $50,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) policy. The district pays the full cost of this coverage. Coverage is automatic and effective on the first of the month after your date of hire. Employees are also provided opportunity to enroll in optional term life and AD&D policies for themselves as well as spouse/domestic partner and children.

    VOLUNTARY BENEFIT PLANS
    The district partners with American Fidelity to administer the district's voluntary benefit plans which include:
    • Disability insurance
    • Cancer insurance
    • Accident insurance
    • Flexible spending accounts

    PRE-TAX RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLAN - As a district employee, you have two voluntary retirement savings plans available to you, which allow you to invest pre-tax dollars to supplement your CalPERS Retirement Plan benefit. They are a 403(b) plan or 457(b) plan.
    You may participate in one or both of the plans. Each is governed by a different section of the IRS Code resulting in different rules and provisions. SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union is the districts third party administrators for all retirement savings plans.

    RETIREMENT PLANS
    CalPERS Retirement Plan - The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is a defined benefit retirement plan that provides lifetime benefits based on members' years of service, age, and final compensation. Full-time employees in non-academic positions appointed for at least six months, or part-time employees working at least 50% and appointed for at least one year, are automatically enrolled in the CalPERS retirement plan. Depending on hire and/or membership date, employees are placed in one of two membership categories: Classic or PEPRA. For more information on CalPERS:
