Job Description

This posting is for a full-time, 12-month, exempt position. Assistant Vice President for Accounting/Controller, Assistant Treasurer, under direction of the Vice President for Business Affairs is responsible for fiscal planning, accounting, cash management, internal audit, financial compliance, treasury management and accounts payable. Ensures that institutional and educational objectives are reflected through annual budget management. Coordinates financial activities to develop systematic accountability; translates long range planning decisions into resource terms with alternative plans of adaptation; ensures that management has adequate reporting system for deliberation of problems and decision making. The Controller is responsible for the integrity and accuracy of the financial accounting system and is responsible for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements, annual audits, cash management, investments and annual budgets. The Controller will operate with an exceptional level of professionalism.

Essential Functions

This position requires regular, predictable, reliable attendance in the office environment.

1. Assure tax compliance to assure the accurate and timely completion of all federal, state and local tax returns. Requires a working knowledge of applicable tax codes and regulations.
2. Prepare financial statements, footnotes, work papers and schedules for the annual external audit.
3. Coordinate with the University's external auditors to oversee the annual financial audit, the annual tax return (990) and other required audits and reviews.
4. Oversee the activities of Accounts Payable, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, purchase orders, petty cash, employee expense reports and cash control.
5. Leads the development of cash and liquidity forecasts and reports including both direct and indirect cash flow analysis. Coordinates the development of multi-year liquidity projections.
6. Lead and coordinate banking relationships which may include other financial services.
7. Oversee the operational and tactical activities of the University Endowment and other University investments.
8. Monitor budgets, cost centers, restricted funds and cash flow and all things that affect University Cash and Liquidity.
9. Ensure the implementation of systems and internal controls to support the integrity of the financial operations.
10. The Controller is an attending participant in the University's Business Affairs Committee, Investment Committee and Audit Committee.
11. Manage the Assistant Controller and Accounts Payable personnel.
12. Supports the integration of the University ERP (Workday) with financial operations.
13. Duties include development, interpretation and application of fiscal policies and procedures in accordance with federal, state, and university regulations and policy.
14. Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data, and enhance the University's value.
15. Works collaboratively with internal and external constituents to ensure efficient use of University resources while providing a high level of customer service.
16. Respond to Vice President of Business Affairs as assigned with accurate and timely work to facilitate financial needs.
17. Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.
18. Communicate with stakeholders including; co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous, confidential and professional manner.
19. Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
20. Perform all other duties deemed appropriate for the position.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for managing the Assistant Controller and Accounts Payable personnel.

This job operates in a professional office environment.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time 12-month position, and general hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Travel
Minimal travel is expected for this position. A valid US Driver's license with a safe driving record is required.

Required Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting.
2. At least 5 years of experience at a professional level in accounting, budgeting and forecasting function preferably in a university or non-profit.
3. Experience supervising staff.

Preferred Education and Experience
1. CPA preferred and/or MBA or CMA.
2. Strong facility with financial application technology, with proficiency in the following software or a comparable system preferred:
Microsoft Office Suite
Workday ERP solution
