Position Overview
The University of Virginia (UVA), one of the nation's leading public institutions, seeks an experienced, dynamic, and mission-driven leader to serve as the next Assistant Vice President for Enterprise Infrastructure (AVP EI) .
The AVP EI will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across a diverse and critical portfolio, including data centers, network engineering, enterprise and cloud platforms, and telephony and video services. They will guide high-performing teams while working collaboratively across UVA's large, complex institution.
This leader must be a strategic thinker and strong communicator who builds trusted relationships and fosters collaboration with a range of stakeholders-including IT leadership, academic partners, and administrative units. The AVP EI will demonstrate empathy, adaptability, and a commitment to service in a fast-evolving technology landscape.
As a key member of the Information Technology Services (ITS) senior leadership team, the AVP EI reports directly to the CIO and is responsible for the delivery of all IT infrastructure and related IT operations used to enable business capabilities and services across the enterprise. The AVP EI is responsible for establishing and maintaining a robust, reliable, and scalable infrastructure to support the University's research, academic, and administrative needs. They will work closely with IT leadership, faculty, and administrative partners to align infrastructure services with institutional priorities and funding, elevate security practices, and promote innovation at scale.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for UVA's enterprise infrastructure areas:
- University Data Centers
- Network Engineering
- Enterprise and Cloud Platforms
- Telephony and Video Services (TVS)
- The AVP EI brings experience, knowledge, and future vision for transforming the infrastructure and operations function including its strategy, operating model, product and service offerings and workforce
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evolution of infrastructure strategies that support the University's long-term goals and technology modernization efforts .
- Ensure highly available , secure, and cost-effective infrastructure services across all UVA.
- Continue the cloud opportunistic approach to moving enterprise services to the cloud when possible, ensuring highly scalable and resilient services.
- Partner closely throughout all areas of ITS to assist with the adoption of forward-thinking solutions that are aligned with the strategic priorities within ITS.
- Lead change management initiatives to modernize UVA's infrastructure services with a focus on service excellence , automation and innovation .
- Develop and execute a strategy to improve awareness of the business value that the Infrastructure and Operations function provides and continuously seek feedback to ensure alignment with end user needs.
- Develop practices and processes t o track and measure the quality of services .
- Build and sustain strong working relationships with key institutional stakeholders, vendors, and peer institutions.
- Introduce innovative, differentiating infrastructure and operations capabilities that enhance our overall competitive capabilities and employee productivity
- Oversee budget planning, resource allocation, and contract/vendor management for the infrastructure portfolio
- Lead and develop a diverse, talented team of infrastructure professionals and promote a culture of continuous learning, inclusion, and accountability.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, engineering, or a related field
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive IT leadership experience, including oversight of large-scale infrastructure environments
- Experience leading technical teams and managing complex enterprise IT projects
- Demonstrated success in strategic planning, budgeting, and vendor management
- Strong understanding of hybrid and cloud computing architectures, data center operations, and network services
- Excellent analytical, strategic conceptual thinking, strategic planning, and execution skills
- Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate vision that inspires and motivates staff and aligns with the IT and business strategy
- Ability to build consensus both internally and through the University , make decisions based on many variables, and gain support for major initiatives
- Advanced degree ( Master's or PhD) in a relevant discipline
- At least 10 years of experience in IT leadership, including oversight of large-scale infrastructure environments
- Experience in a higher education or similarly complex decentralized environment
- Effective influencing and negotiation skills in complex environments where resources required for success may not be in direct control of this role
- Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks and compliance in regulated environments
- Expertise in IT service management (ITSM), enterprise architecture, or cloud optimization
- Strategic Thinking - Ability to translate institutional goals into sustainable infrastructure strategies
