Other conditions: This hire is a full-time, tenure-track position on institutional funds, annually renewable depending on performance, and expected to begin approximately July-August 2025 or soon thereafter, subject to position clearance and fund availability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The University of Hawai'i Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is seeking a scholarly individual with a strong and documented commitment to research and teaching that will be a role model and mentor for our learners and colleagues. Faculty in this classification are expected to provide a minimum of 20% effort towards teaching, research, and service, respectively. Actual effort may vary based on the positions and department's operational needs.

Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in teaching graduate, undergraduate, and/or medical student-level courses or seminars.
  • Supervise, mentor, train, and advise M.S. and Ph.D. students and/or residents and fellows.
  • Supervise independent study activities and off-campus learning such as practicums and internships.
  • Serve as academic advisor to undergraduate and graduate students and/or on advanced degree committees.
  • Provide services to the department, school, University, and professional and/or lay community.
  • Collaborate actively with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, fellows, other research partners, and affiliate organizations on research projects and activities.
  • Pursue independent and collaborative research focusing on cellular and/or molecular biology with a strong preference for neurosciences, including (but not limited to) neurodegeneration diseases and exposures.
  • Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in neurosciences, including (but not limited to) neurodegeneration diseases and behavior disorders and/or associated with exposures.
  • Continue to seek extramural funding actively.
  • Establish or build on a regional reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and similar activities.
  • Other scholar duties as assigned.

Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities

Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:
  • Establish or build on a national reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and similar activities.
  • Provide services to the department, school, University, such as department personnel committees, departmental or university Tenure and Promotion Review Committees, Faculty Senate etc.

Professor Dutiesand Responsibilities

Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:
  • Establish or build on an international reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and similar activities.

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. (and/or M.D.) in biological science or relevant field from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach courses for undergraduate, graduate, and/or medical student.
  • Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity, e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals and extramural funding (National Institutes of Health (NIH) or related).
  • Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in neurosciences, including (but not limited to) neurodegeneration diseases and behavior disorders and/or associated with exposures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and lead a research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications:

Same as Assistant Professor with the additional minimum qualifications below:
  • At least four (4) years of college or university teaching as Assistant Professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
  • Candidates with an M.D. degree who are applying at the associate professor rank should have seven (7) or more years of postdoctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship.
  • Evidence of proficiency in teaching undergraduate, graduate, and/or medical students.
  • Scholarly achievement is judged competent and adequate for the rank compared to peers in the same field at major research universities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a research laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to sustain extramural funding and work in a collaborative environment.

Professor Minimum Qualifications:

Same as Associate Professor with the additional minimum qualifications below:
  • Established international reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and similar activities.
  • Evidence of leadership experience

Desirable Qualifications for Assistant, Associate, and Professor:
  • Demonstrated independence (see below)
  • First and/or senior author papers in high-quality journals.
  • Current extramural support (for example, NIHR01 or equivalent).
  • National and international recognition for lasting contributions to the biomedical research in their field of expertise.
  • Experience in serving on NIH or equivalent study section(s).
  • Experience in serving on editorial boards of peer-reviewed journal(s).
  • Specialization in a research area that focuses on neurosciences and related pathologies.
