Position Highlights
The Office of Faculty Affairs provides oversight for all faculty and academic personnel actions in the College of Medicine including academic appointments, reviews, and promotions and tenure. Faculty Affairs focuses on developing and coordinating activities that enhance the work-life and professional development of all faculty in College of Medicine-Tucson. The office serves as a resource for administrators regarding the interpretation and application of faculty related policies and guidelines.
The Associate Dean, Career Development (ADCD), will provide vision and oversight of faculty career development at the College of Medicine - Tucson. The ADCD leads a comprehensive group of career & professional development programs open to all College of Medicine - Tucson faculty. These programs collaborate with Banner and other offices at the College to promote faculty career growth and wellness. As a component of the College's strategic plan, the effectiveness of the programs is reviewed annually.
This is a position anticipated to comprise 0.3 FTE. It is expected that the candidate will couple this role with one or more of the tripartite mission areas towards a 1.0 FTE. The successful candidate will also fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (T/TE).

Duties & Responsibilities
CareerDevelopment & Wellness
- Lead comprehensive faculty career development programs in support of the College's mission to advance health and wellness through education, research, and patient care, in collaboration with other College of Medicine leaders:
- New Faculty Retreat, designed to build community and network with colleagues, create a blended culture between UA and Banner, meet people and resources available to enhance work-life and career development, and learn about opportunities to build a career in academic medicine (2x/year);
- College of Medicine Peer Advancement Societies (COMPAS), designed for faculty new to academic medicine to engage in peer-mentoring and receive guidance from content experts and experienced faculty (every other year, 15-25 participants and 6 meetings per year);
- College of Medicine Mid-Academic iNtentional Development (COMMAND), designed for mid-career faculty to discover what is next for their careers and direct their career in a deliberate manner (every other year, 15-25 participants and 6 meetings per year);
- Medical Education Retreat (1x/year), a collaboration with Office of Education and AMES.
- Assess program outcomes and success annually, and report measures of efficacy and effects on faculty career development to the Associate of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) at their annual meetings, by submitting annually relevant abstracts to a regional or national AAMC program.
Faculty Engagement & Recognition
- Establish and implement a yearly Faculty Appreciation Event to engage and strengthen the relationship between Banner-employed faculty and UA-employed faculty and promote interdepartmental relationships (150-200+ faculty and family attendees, 1x/year).
- Assist with faculty onboarding with both UA and Banner faculty hires.
- Manage, promote and administer 8-12 Mentoring Awards annually.
- Collaborate with Vice Deans to promote and administer 12 Faculty Excellence Awards annually in the categories: Clinical; Community, Access and Belonging; Research; Graduate Medical Education.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Dean, Wellness on College-wide events which improve and strengthen faculty wellbeing.
- Lead the planning and delivery of 2 General Faculty Meetings and 2 General Faculty Forums per year for all (~1612) College of Medicine-Tucson faculty.
Service
- Serve as Ex-officio Member of the Dean's Council on Faculty Affairs (DCFA) and provide vision and guidance for the 12 members of DCFA. This committee develops and implements programs that will enhance faculty life (for example, career development, mentoring, leadership, etc.), develops policies pertinent to the faculty at the College of Medicine, and advises the Dean on faculty affairs matters at the College of Medicine (e.g., promotion and tenure, recruitment, and retention, etc.).
- Serve as Ex-officio Member of a Faculty Advisory Committee and provide vision and guidance for the 10 committee members. This committee identifies strategies, tactics, and priorities for improving faculty engagement at the College of Medicine, assists in determining how to integrate opportunities into college-wide activities, provides a line of communication between faculty and administration, and supports development and implementation of programs that enhance faculty life (career development, mentoring, leadership, community outreach, etc.)
- Liaise with UA central administration initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Established expertise working with various communities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have MD or PhD from an accredited institution and at least five (5+) years of experience within an academic medical setting.
- Must have a current clinical faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (T/TE) or Professor (T/TE) within the College of Medicine - Tucson.
- Eligible for clinical privileges at B-UMCT.
- Board certified by the American Board of Medical Subspecialties and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
- At least four (4+) years of successful leadership experience within an academic/clinical setting.
- Demonstrated success in leading, assessing, and operationalizing career development activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of the unique aspects of the UA/Banner partnership.
