Position Highlights

The position of the Associate Dean, Clinical Research is to provide leadership and oversight to patient-oriented research at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. This Associate Dean will provide important scientific input, medical direction, and supervision to clinical research within the College by coordinating with investigators and clinical trials units, promoting clinical research within the College, and providing opportunities for new investigators to participate in and lead clinical trials and related research.

Reporting to the Vice Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, the Associate Dean, Clinical Research will also develop didactic and instructional opportunities for faculty to learn and engage in clinical trials research.

This position will be up to 0.30 FTE and it is expected that the candidate will couple their Deanship FTE with one or more of the tripartite mission areas towards a 1.0 FTE. The successful candidate will also fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (NTE/TE/T).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Increase the clinical research portfolio, both NIH type sponsored research, cooperative group, investigator initiated, and industry sponsored clinical trials.
  • Expand clinical research and study subject accrual into clinical trials across the College.
  • Develop COM-T programs in clinical sciences that focus on advancing clinical trials and implementation.
  • Interface with University entities that focus on clinical research and clinical trials.
  • Develop clinical research training programs and opportunities for junior investigators to increase engagement among trainees and junior faculty.
  • Interface with Banner clinical research and align strategic priorities for clinical research growth.
  • Serve as COM-T liaison to the UA's Office of Responsible Outside Interests and the IRB program.
  • Interface with UAHS clinical research infrastructure and other UAHS entities, including budgeting and contracts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Understanding of the unique aspects of the UA/Banner partnership.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have MD degree or equivalent from an accredited institution and be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Medical Subspecialties and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • Eligible for clinical privileges at B-UMCT.
  • Five years of clinical research experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5-8 years of ongoing experience opening, accruing and closing clinical trials.
  • Experience overseeing and supervising clinical research and principal investigators of clinical trials.
  • Established experience in working with faculty in developing clinical research programs.
  • Established experience in assessing adherence to clinical research guidelines.
  • Experience building and overseeing clinical research programs, including clinical trials.
  • Advanced training/degree in biomedical research.
