Description of Work

Assists Associate Dean or Dean in department operations. Supervises and coordinates various department activities. Serves as a resource and referral source for students seeking various types of assistance. Serves on University councils, committees, work groups, and other bodies. Works as a liaison for the local community and especially local bodies of higher education. Develops and implements strategic planning specific to programs within the department including marketing and staffing. Collaborates with the Dean and other department entities to oversee the academic program and ensure quality faculty and student support services. Provides direction and assistance in preparation of budget requests; monitors budgeting expenditures at all levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist the Dean in implementing the college's strategic plan and vision, and lead institutional strategies aimed at supporting faculty success including recruitment, retention, development, review, promotion, and workload policy. Faculty support includes tenure track, tenured, non-tenure track, visiting, and part time faculty. The Associate Dean will work to ensure that the College of Engineering is supporting the highest academic, professional, and ethical standards, and a collegial culture that embraces different perspectives, civil discourse, and free expression, where all university members are treated with dignity and respect. The Associate Dean collaborates with College leadership and the Department Chairs as well the Offices of Academic Affairs, Civil Rights and Title IX, Legal Affairs, Faculty Council and others as it relates to faculty success. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean and may assume some duties of the Dean in his/her absence.

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is one of the ranking administrators in the college and may act for the dean in the case of the dean's absence. Specific areas of responsibility include
  • Assisting departments with faculty recruiting, retirement, emeritus nominations
  • New faculty orientation
  • Coordination of the promotion and/or tenure and third-year review processes
  • Coordination of the post tenure review process
  • Review requests for promotion and retention outside RPT process
  • Faculty teaching excellence awards
  • Faculty mentoring of teaching
  • Distinguished and endowed professorships
  • Faculty grievances
  • Faculty workload policy
  • Aid and advise department chairs
  • Faculty conflicts of interest
  • Faculty entrepreneurship/intellectual property
  • College bylaws and strategic plan
  • Other assigned duties at the discretion of the dean

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is expected to teach at least one course per year. The ultimate goal for the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is to support, advocate for, and advance faculty success at all levels of the institution.

Serves on the College Administrative Committee (CAC). The Associate Dean represents the college at conferences, university and system-wide planning meetings, and at community functions as needed. The Associate Dean reports to the dean, and the dean can delegate other responsibilities as needed.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Tenured faculty at the Professor level in the William States Lee College of Engineering
