Job Description
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
The Associate Dean reports to the division dean and provides leadership and oversight for an academic division of instructional programs and courses that support the first two years of baccalaureate education and prepare students to enter the workforce directly. In conjunction with the division dean, the associate dean provides a key leadership role in the recruitment, professional development, evaluation, and promotion of full-time and adjunct faculty. In close collaboration with the faculty and other academic administrators, the Associate Dean promotes and ensures quality, integrity, currency, and responsiveness of all instructional activities and promotes the division's vision that advances the College's mission and contributes to the achievement of the College's goals and objectives for student success. By supporting the division's innovative partnerships and grant opportunities, the associate dean represents the College in community outreach.
A description of the academic division
The Division for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) contains a wide variety of academic programs, including Associate of Science degrees, Associate of Applied Science degrees, Certificates, and Career Studies Certificates that support direct transfer to four-year colleges and universities, as well as direct pathways to careers. The academic disciplines include Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Architecture, Automotive, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Computer Science, Drafting, Electrical Technology, Electronics Technology, Engineering, Geographical Information Systems, Geology, Industrial Engineering Technology, Information Technologies, Instrumentation, Machine Technology, Marine Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Natural Science, Physics, Safety, and Unmanned Systems.
Duties and responsibilities
The associate dean works under the supervision of the division dean and works closely with faculty to facilitate instructional, curricular, and operational excellence in alignment with the college's strategic goals. Broad responsibilities include:
Provides leadership and operational oversight of the division's day-to-day operations.
o Trains and assists department chairs in supporting dual enrollment and adjunct faculty.
o Collaborates with the Dean to develop and implement the course scheduling process and plan for the division in accordance with strategic objectives.
o Serves as the primary point of contact for resolution of student and faculty issues and concerns.
o Serves as division point of contact for resolution of classroom technology issues.
o Ensures issues, processes, and procedures are properly documented and communicated.
o Resolves and communicates resolutions promptly to all affected parties.
o Works collaboratively with the division dean to implement fiscal planning, track expenditures, and administer grants.
Supervises, recruits, develops, supports, and evaluates adjunct faculty.
o Recruits, reviews applicant credentials, onboards, supervises, and evaluates adjunct and dual enrollment faculty.
Supports dual enrollment program quality and policy compliance.
o Serves as the primary point of contact for division dual enrollment courses, programs, and faculty, including curricular support.
o Observes and evaluates adjunct faculty, including dual enrollment faculty, per the college adjunct evaluation plan.
Provides operational oversight for program review and course evaluation processes.
o Coordinates the division program review and assessment processes in collaboration with the Dean, the Director of Institutional Research, and department chairs/program heads.
o Provide administrative leadership and support for academic courses and activities throughout the campus as assigned.
Serves as a member of the college's mid-level management leadership team.
o Acts on behalf of the Division Dean and represents the division both on- and off-campus.
o Other duties as assigned.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
A master's degree in a discipline served by the academic unit or a related master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Experience in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation, integrated higher education student information systems, and development and application of academic policies and procedures.
Specialized knowledge and experience in:
o Implementing best practices and innovative strategies that support teaching and learning.
o Supervising personnel, training methodologies, and communication techniques.
o Managing and developing curriculum.
Skills:
