The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) is a leader in advancing the understanding of and engagement in world issues. The Jackson School of International Studies has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Division Two to join their team.

The Associate Director for Division 2 will oversee the operational, strategic, and financial management of a designated division comprising South Asia Center, African Studies Program, Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, and Middle East Center. This role will be a member of the JSIS leadership team to collectively set strategic goals, develop impactful programs, and ensure compliance with federal and university regulations. The associate director fosters a collaborative team environment that will coordinate with other divisional leaders and academic departments, overseeing administrative processes and collaborative activities. This position supports faculty and student engagement across the division's educational, research., and public outreach endeavors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration: 34%

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the division's programs, identifying opportunities for expansion and enhancement, monitoring program performance, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Oversee compliance with all federal and university regulations in collaboration with the JSIS Business Office.
  • Manage division staff recruitment, training, and performance, conducting annual performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with division faculty and the Office of Academic Services to coordinate JSIS academic programs.
  • Oversee visiting scholars and serve as a resource for inquiries about East Asia programs.
  • Work with faculty chairs to identify and pursue fundraising goals, engaging new and existing donors and funding opportunities.
  • Represent the division and Title VI Center at national directors' meetings, conferences, and other administrative meetings.
  • Support student advising on curriculum, study abroad, fellowships/internships, and career opportunities.
    Budget Management and Reporting: 33%
  • Act as cost center manager for Division 2 program budgets, tracking, approving, and ensuring accuracy and timely delivery of financial transactions.
  • Reconcile grant, gift, and revenue accounts, ensuring timely budget tracking and reporting.
  • Work with JSIS Business Office to develop comprehensive financial plans and projections for all division budgets.
  • Lead significant grant writing efforts, data collection, and comprehensive budget management for the US Department of Education Title VI and other grants as necessary.
  • Prepare and submit all required reports for US Department of Education and other grants.
  • Oversee data collection for quadrennial Title VI grant application and annual reports.
    Outreach and Events: 33%
  • Collaborate with other JSIS divisions, centers, and programs to organize events, professional development, and outreach activities.
  • With faculty chairs, develop and oversee academic conferences, lectures, colloquia, and symposia throughout the year.
  • With faculty chairs, coordinate visits by relevant scholars and other distinguished guests.
  • Partner with off-campus community organizations on joint activities for public and business outreach events.
  • Collaborate with College of Arts & Sciences departments and other UW units (e.g., Law, Business, Global Health) to support the division's activities and programs of study.
  • Work with JSIS Central Services to oversee the development of all printed and electronic communications for program visibility.
  • Serve on campus, local, and national boards to enhance the division's partnerships within UW and the broader community.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's Degree in International Studies, or other related discipline and two or more years experience providing relevant or related experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience in public speaking and making effective presentations to diverse groups.
  • Proven success in managing multiple types of budgets in a complex fiscal environment.
  • Proven success in grant writing and reporting; federal grant experience preferred.
  • General office management and supervisory experience.
  • Excellent writing, copy editing, and research skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle a high volume of work.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with presenters, program participants, and faculty.
  • Proven experience in managing organizational strategy and change preferred.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Significant experience administering large federally funded education programs and/or experience managing large federal budgets.
  • Extensive knowledge of South Asia, or any of the following: Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Caribbean.
  • Substantial experience in international education from K-16 through post-secondary and graduate levels.
