The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (), a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.
LUMCON's mission is to promote, facilitate and conduct research and education collaborations among Louisiana's universities in marine and coastal sciences relevant to the sustainability of coastal and marine environments of the Louisiana Gulf coast. LUMCON is a physical presence and statewide resource located on the coast that consists of research and science programs, education and outreach, facilities (Marine Center in Cocodrie and Maritime Campus in Houma), and vessels and dive operations. It also serves as the host state agency for two federally supported affiliates (Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and the soon to be designated Atchafalaya National Estuarine Research Reserve). LUMCON provides unparalleled opportunities in marine science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana's dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON expanded its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility (Blue Works) in Houma.
LUMCON is also a consortium of all 32 postsecondary institutions (including the members of the Louisiana State University System, University of Louisiana System, Southern University System, and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS)) plus the ten members of the Louisiana Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (LAICU). Finally, LUMCON is a community hub with the expertise, resources, and capacity to make the state a leader in all aspects of coastal and marine study and life through its convening and collaboration capacity to address our most compelling questions and challenges.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Associate Director of Science (ADS) position will serve as the head of LUMCON's faculty and report directly to the Executive Director & Chief Scientist (ED/CS) as a member of the LUMCON Management Team. The Associate Director of Science will oversee all scientific programs, research facilities and usage. The ADS will be asked to represent the LUMCON when the ED/CS is unavailable. The position will aid in the coordination of consortium member institutions to facilitate/coordinate research activities and work with the Associate Director of Education & Outreach to integrate the two programs. The ADS will work with the ED/CS to grow LUMCON's research programs and raise the funds necessary to support those programs and activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in coastal and/or marine science related field.
- At least 10 years of post-PhD research experience.
- Record of staff and project supervision.
- Record of program leadership.
- Strong publication record.
- Track record of successful funding for research program.
- Experience mentoring early career scientists, postdoctoral researchers and students.
IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong record of leadership experience.
- Experience in program development and maintenance.
- Experience to be hired at Full Professor level.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- The ADS's research laboratory will be based at the DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie, but the position will be expected to work from all of LUMCON's locations.
- In addition to being a member of the LUMCON leadership team, this position will be the head of the LUMCON faculty. All LUMCON faculty are expected to perform (and are evaluated) in four core areas (research, consortium, education and outreach, and service):
- Conduct research in a relevant scientific discipline, secure grant funding, and publish results of research activities in refereed journals and other appropriate media.
- Engage in education and outreach activities including teaching, mentorship, participation in LUMCON E & O programs, and public engagement.
- Contribute to the consortium through research, education, mentorship, and outreach.
- Make contributions via service both within LUMCON and the Consortium as well to the broader scientific community and public.
- Faculty are evaluated according to the LUMCON "Policies Concerning Faculty Appointment, Evaluation, Continued Employment, and Promotion" document most recently updated on 2020.10.21.
