The Associate University Counsel assists the University Counsel in managing the legal representation of the University. The role handles responsibilities relative to an extensive range of University legal matters with a special emphasis on corporate governance, compliance, bond issuance and finance, litigation and dispute resolution, internal investigations, contract review, preparation and negotiation, labor and personnel issues, student affairs, institutional policies and administrators, deans, faculty and staff.

Position Duties
  • Assists the University Counsel in managing the legal representation of the University.
  • Handles responsibilities relative to an extensive range of University legal matters with a special emphasis on corporate governance, compliance, bond issuance and finance, litigation and dispute resolution, internal investigations, contract review, preparation and negotiation, labor and personnel issues, student affairs, institutional policies and administrators, deans, faculty and staff.
  • Provides guidance and legal counsel to senior leadership at the University on a variety of legal matters.
  • Drafts, reviews, and recommends approval of policies to support legal compliance throughout the University.
  • Participates in contract negotiations on behalf of the University.
  • Manages Counsel's Office in the General Counsel's Absence.
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.


Supervision Exercised

Periodically assigns projects to attorneys, administrative support staff, and student employees, supervising completion of same.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.

Requirements

Position Qualifications
  • JD degree, admitted to the New York State Bar (or immediately eligible for admission).
  • 10+ years of practice in a quality legal environment, or which at least five years should be in field of education law or related practice.
  • Strong academic background.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
