General Function

The Associate Vice President for Curriculum Instruction plays a crucial role in supporting the Provost in developing, implementing, and evaluating educational and workforce programs that align with labor market demands and the college's strategic goals. This position involves coordinating academic planning and program review processes with academic administrators and faculty, ensuring that curricular programs comply with college standards, policies, and procedures, and leadership in the development of a robust online learning division. Provides highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the Provost in areas of expertise and performs related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for the College's curriculum and instructional program operations, general education foundations, student learning outcomes, and identification of new program applications and associated correspondence.
  • Collect and analyze data to inform business decisions related to program offerings, course delivery, and budget management.
  • Responsible for the administration and oversight of the following areas: College and Career Readiness (CCR), Curriculum Committee, Online Learning division, Library Services, Academic Engagement (tutoring, honors program, global learning), academic dual enrollment coordination, and other assigned areas.
  • Provides strategic oversight and guidance to ensure the effective operation of the CCR program. This includes coordinating with the Director to plan, administer, and evaluate all activities and procedures necessary for the instructional division. Ensure that the CCR program aligns with the college's mission and goals, complies with accreditation standards, and meets the needs of students and the community.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to enhance program offerings, support dual enrollment opportunities, and foster partnerships with secondary and postsecondary institutions Grow dual enrollment opportunities for high school students throughout the county through active collaboration in partnership with Associate Vice Presidents and county secondary partners.
  • Oversee the development and ongoing maintenance of the online learning division. Responsible for creating, managing, and serving as a liaison between departments to build and grow an online division of the college, while ensuring compliance with academic accreditation standards and institutional policies.
  • Develop and implement short and long-range strategic plans to advance the college's mission and goals in online learning. Serve as the academic leadership point of contact for learning management system.
  • Provide the necessary support in the online space for faculty (professional development), staff (operations support), and students (orientation, academic and technical support) to be successful in their respective roles.
  • Responsible for secondary and postsecondary articulation initiatives and emerging programs. Manage selected programs such as the Central Piedmont Academy, work collaboratively with committees; liaison to community entities and workgroups as directed by the Provost. Strengthen ties and articulations with four-year institutions to fortify best practices in teaching and learning and to improve transfer rates and student success.
  • In partnership with academic leaders, create and/or expand pathways for growth for students to seamlessly transition between curriculum and continuing education. This may include micro-credentialing and creating opportunities for seamless growth between workforce development and academic programs to enable students to earn academic credit for their work in stages and advance the overall mission and values regarding having an environment devoted to student success.
  • Serve as a liaison between various departments of the college and Academic Affairs, as directed by the Provost.
  • Coordinate multi-campus program review processes and strengthen overall assessment of student learning, in collaboration with the Institutional Research Office, academic leaders, and faculty to strengthen viable programs, innovate new and emerging programs in the field, and teach out those that are no longer sustainable.
  • Responsible for program compliance and academic accreditation standards in partnership with the Institutional Effectiveness director.
  • Collaborate with shared governance bodies to update academic policies and procedures to advance student success; make the college more efficient and understandable to students, serving as the academic lead for policies and procedures.
  • Strengthen academic support services for students in alignment with our programs through active partnership with campus library directors, Center for Academic Support and Excellence.
  • Provide leadership of the Academic Operations team to optimize class scheduling across all platforms (on-ground, online, and hybrid) to maximize student access, fairness, and academic success in collaboration with academic leaders.
  • Remain at the forefront of academic-related innovation, trends, employer needs, advisory board recommendations, etc., and the role higher education can play in meeting workforce gaps and introducing emerging technologies in the classroom.
  • Consult with and provide staff assistance and advice to the Provost; develop, prepare, and present recommendations and reports as requested.
  • Provide leadership for campus locations, as directed.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

  • Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Documented evidence of effective communication and successful implementation of projects and/or programs
    • Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible administrative experience, including managerial and supervisory experience in higher education.
    • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)
    • Experience with regional and specialized accreditation agencies, curriculum development and implementation, developmental education, instructional technology planning, program assessment and review.
    • Demonstrated integrity and transparency in communicating and collaborating on decisions impacting student, discipline, program, campus, or college.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Doctoral Degree from a regionally accredited institution
    • Leadership experience in the North Carolina Community College System at the dean level or higher
    • At least five years of senior-level academic administrative and leadership experience serving a diverse student population, preferably in a large multi-campus college, community college district, or university.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with the use of data, evidence, and analysis in decision-making.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the North Carolina Community College System laws, regulations, procedures, and state board code.
    • Five years of teaching experience at a community college or university or equivalent alternative
