WHO WE ARE
The Office of the County Attorney (OCA) is the Chief Legal Officer of Montgomery County Government and to conduct all its legal business.

OCA provides legal advice and services to County departments, agencies, boards, and commissions, as well as the County Council. Members of the office:
  • Research legal issues and provide opinions
  • Prepare and present legislation
  • Negotiate and prepare agreements and other documents on behalf of the County
  • Draft resolutions and ordinances
  • Acquire and convey title to real property
  • Represent the County in court and before various administrative bodies
  • Collect various County fees and charges
  • Publish the County Charter, Code, Zoning Ordinance and Opinions


WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Montgomery County Government-Office of the County Attorney is currently recruiting for an experienced full-time attorney for its Division of Labor Relations and Public Safety.
Attorneys in this Division provide legal advice and represent Montgomery County Government in all labor and personnel matters. They serve as general counsel for the following County agencies: Montgomery Fire and Rescue Services, Office of Human Resources, Office of Labor Relations, Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, and the Police Department and its Internal Affairs Division. Attorneys in this Division also defend or prosecute contested cases involving the County, Self-Insurance Fund agencies, and their employees, while pending before State and Federal appellate courts.

What You'll Be Doing

The Attorney will:
  • Act as general counsel and provide legal advice on labor and employment matters
  • Defend or prosecute cases involving the County, Self-Insurance Fund agencies, and their employees before State and Federal courts.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited university school of law.

Experience: Thorough (four (4) years) experience as an attorney, including some specialized (one (1) year) experience in local government, employee-labor relations, and/or employment law.

Equivalency: None.

License: Membership in the Maryland State Bar.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

There is no Preferred Criteria. All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview.
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Employee-labor relations experience
  • Union negotiation experience
  • Employment law experience
