Why does the job exist?

The Attorney will:
  • Provide legal services to The Health Care Authority (HCA), Child Support Services Division (CSSD).


How does it get done?

The Attorney is responsible for:
  • Drafting, reviewing, and evaluating legal documents, pleadings (Petitions for Parentage/Child Support, Motions, Orders, administrative enforcement actions, etc) and legal precedents, conducting discovery and interviewing child support parties, negotiating settlements;
  • Reviewing regulations, legislation, legal precedents, and internal policy and procedures, provide legal advice to CSSD staff;
  • Appearing in court and administrative hearings, making recommendations for, and assisting in appellate proceedings;
  • Researching and analyzing a variety of child support issues, and propose strategy on specific child support matters;
  • Interacting extensively with pro-se parties.

  • Parties of child support cases;
  • Child Support Services (CSSD) management and staff.


Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has:
  • Five (5) years or more experience as a licensed attorney;
  • A license or eligible to be licensed in New Mexico;
  • Experience in public sector law, family law and/or Federal or State Child Support programs;
  • Excellent legal writing and verbal skills;
  • Excellent computer skills and technologically savvy.


Minimum Qualification

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Employment Requirements

All Attorney classifications must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney and in good standing by the highest court of another state and eligible pursuant to the limited license provisions (See Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Employment is subject to a pre-employment criminal history background investigation and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting: late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel is required. Possible exposure to irate clientele. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints.
