Reporting to the Species Director, the Avian Lab Manager is responsible for the overall laboratory operations for the avian programs at Colossal. The role will work closely with cross-functional leaders and teams to ensure the efficient operations of all Avian projects. The individual will ensure avian projects stay on track via the removal of roadblocks or bottlenecks slowing down scientific progress. The Lab Manager ensures research staff can focus on the science and deliver on program objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides operational management associated with Avian programs, including:
- End to end vendor management for laboratory equipment specific to Avian programs. Order new equipment and coordinate equipment repairs.
- Stays informed about new products, equipment, or reagents that can optimize Avian workflows.
- Coordinates with other species teams and affiliates to ensure effective management of lab equipment and reagents.
- Coordinates with Lab Operations management and building staff as needed to ensure research activities can proceed.
- Optimizes lab processes through identification of inefficiencies and proposes/implements solutions to improve efficiencies.
- Project management across avian projects to include:
- Ensure projects stay on time, on budget, and on scope.
- Tracking of project deliverables, supplies, and research team resources.
- Provides scientific leadership and expertise in support of Avian research to include:
- Oversees cell engineering workflows.
- Participates in laboratory meetings both scientifically and operationally.
- Monitors adherence to protocols in the cell culture room and addresses any issues that arise.
- Trains new team members on lab protocols.
- Keeps Species Director and other leadership informed of progress through regular updates.
- Prepares presentations as required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Effective leadership skills to oversee cell engineering team.
- Project management experience.
- Must have strong communication, organization, and negotiation skills.
- Proven collaborative skills and experience in a fast-paced environment is a plus.
- Must be a creative and proactive problem solver with a focus on delivering results.
- Ability to make decisions that are guided by data, general consensus, and best practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the operational requirements and standards of a Biotech lab.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate lab experience, including at least 2 years in lab operations or project management is required.
- Must have prior hands-on research experience with cell culture.
- Prior experience working with avian eggs in a lab environment is a plus.
- Previous experience managing internal staff or external vendors/consultants is required.
