Responsibilities
  • Design and execute destructive tests on cells and modules to further our understanding of the parameters that will enable development of safer cells.
  • Characterize and model cell thermal behavior.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to product safety including Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), verification and validation test results, and third-party certifications.
  • Develop test procedures and training materials for executing testing including safety protocols.
  • Evaluate cells and batteries in unusual conditions and determine a plan for safe removal and disposal utilizing proper safety measures and PPE.
  • Stay up to date with industry standards and new research in the field.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering team to design new testing and containment equipment.
  • Perform hands on work from set up to clean up of tests and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare documentation and deliver technical presentations.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of battery technologies, especially lithium ion.
  • Experience with product compliance testing (UN, UL, IEC, GBT, etc.).
  • BS degree in an engineering discipline, chemistry, physics, or other degree with focus on science, engineering, and quantitative analysis (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of material properties and applications. Understand cell chemistry impact to cell design and development.
  • Experience with ARC (accelerating rate calorimetry) is a plus.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience in COMSOL modeling is a plus.
  • Ability to work with a personal computer for two (2) to six (6) hours each day if needed.
  • Capability to work in a battery abuse testing laboratory (open air or smaller containment boxes) with potentially hazardous and/or toxic chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment (goggles, masks, respirator, etc.) for four (4) to eight (8) hours each day.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 Lbs.
  • Capacity to work quickly and effectively. He/she will occasionally need to come to work early and/or stay late when required to finish tasks or meet deadlines. The job requires the ability to handle a variety of tasks and switch rapidly between them.
