Job Description
The Bridges and Structures Bureau budget prepares approximately 200 design plans annually with an estimated construction cost of approximately $300 million. As the Bridge Project Development Engineer (Transportation Engineer Administrator) , you will foster growth and support for its reporting team through the Iowa Department of Transportation's Mission: Making Lives Better Through Transportation and demonstrate actions and behaviors guided by the Iowa Department of Transportation's five CORE values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.
As a people manager, this position will be responsible for aligning efforts of commitment, transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior of its team. You will supervises four bridge engineer specialists, one bridge engineer and one bridge engineer associate in the Consultant Coordination Unit. Additionally, you will supervise one bridge engineer manager who leads the Preliminary Design Unit. The Preliminary Design Unit consists of one engineer manager, 8 additional engineers and technicians working to develop the preliminary bridges and structures program.
Location: Ames, Iowa
Shift Requirements: Days, M-F; Hybrid teleworking and flexible schedules available.
Travel: This position may require some overnight travel
Special Requirements: Applicant must have an Iowa Professional Engineering license at the time of appointment and is responsible for maintaining the license by meeting continuing education requirements and all other professional obligations required by the State of Iowa.
Additional duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage, supervise and direct the design and plan preparation activities for the Preliminary Design Unit and Consultant Coordination Unit.
  • Manage the resources of the Preliminary Design and Consultant Review Units in the Bridge Project Development Section to optimize productivity, implement effective design and plan development and meet deliverable schedules.
  • Assist the Bridges & Structures Bureau Director in the administration of the Bridges and Structures Bureau to accomplish the goals and objectives of the bureau in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide technical support and guidance for consultant review engineers for the resolution of complex problems on design work prepared by consultants.
  • Undertake special assignments as directed by the Bridges & Structures Bureau Director to accomplish the responsibilities of the bureau.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Four years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Manager or Transportation Engineer Senior or three years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist.

Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
