Position Highlights
The Building Automation Project Specialist serves as a subject matter expert supporting University Facility Services in the implementation and optimization of building automation system (BAS) performance. With minimal technical supervision, this role is responsible for developing, installing, and commissioning BAS programming, as well as managing system upgrades and improvement projects. Additionally, the specialist collaborates with the UFS commissioning and analytics team to identify and address energy efficiency and performance enhancement opportunities through fault detection and retro-commissioning initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Investigates and reviews programming issues and opportunities as communicated by UFS staff or self-identified.
  • Develops, implements and commissions BAS programming and control strategies for UFS BAS systems and equipment.
  • Programs and configures BAS controllers, sensors, control devices and other BAS equipment to ensure proper system functionality.
  • Coordinates with UFS Building Automation and/or IT staff to use standard BAS protocols including BACnet, Modbus and/or LONWorks for system integration.
  • Identifies and/or consults on building automation system project opportunities and requirements.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in developing scope, goals, budgets and schedules for BAS projects.
  • Acts as UFS project manager for BAS projects as assigned, including management and coordination of contractors and design professionals.
  • Coordinates and assists UFS Commissioning & Analytics team to ensure proper commissioning of BAS projects.
  • Provides "in-house" technical expertise on building automation design and implementation for special assignment projects and will be viewed as the subject matter expert in this area.
  • Assists the Energy Engineer and/or in reviewing and recommending potential energy efficiency and sustainable technologies measures for implementation into projects.
  • Provides subject matter expertise in support of UFS in-house commissioning and verification initiatives.
  • May provide or assist in providing technical training to UFS shops, design teams, project managers and/or leadership on "smart building technologies".

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of design engineering intent, sequence of operations and general theories of operations for building mechanical systems, including HVAC, Building Energy Management Control Systems, plumbing, and fire protection.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and resolving complex building automation issues, including diagnosing hardware vs. software root cause from integrated system down to component level issues.
  • Skill in reading building design documentation, equipment submittal and cut sheets, and engineered sequences of operations.
  • Ability to program complex building automation sequences of operations at component and system level.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Niagara N4 certification.
  • Demonstrated experience in BAS programming on Niagara and Distech building automation suites.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience delivering a project while working with or for a public entity.
  • Experience working on existing building retrofit projects affecting partial building systems with related systems remaining unaffected.
