Description
Reports to the Building Official under the Chief Electrical Inspector's supervision. Conducts technical field inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including the Florida Building Code, National Electrical Code, and State Statutes. Interprets and enforces building codes, policies, and procedures to protect public safety, property, and general welfare. Reviews permits, plans, and construction projects, providing technical guidance to architects, engineers, contractors, and homeowners. Investigates code violations, conducts inspections, issues corrective notices, and recommends remedial actions. Coordinates with other trade inspectors and City departments to ensure compliance. Audits Private Providers, monitors job site safety, and enforces NPDES Best Management Practices. Assists in emergency response efforts, including Rapid Impact/Damage Assessment after storm events. Performs after-hours emergency inspections when requested by BSO and PBFD. Conducts annual inspections of businesses and multi-unit housing. Utilizes software applications for documentation and maintains certification through mandatory continuing education. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals per Chapter 2, Section 201.2 (A).
  • Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board certification as a Standard Inspector (F.S. 468.607) within one year of hire.
  • Licensed as a Professional Electrical Engineer or certified as a Master Electrician, Electrical Contractor, or Electrical Journeyman with required construction experience (Broward County Administrative Provisions 104.12.3). Equivalent training and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Class E driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain FEMA NIMS certification up to level G-400.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Expertise in building construction materials, methods, codes, and regulations.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and construction plans.
  • Skilled in identifying and correcting code violations at various construction stages.
  • Knowledge of mapping, basic engineering principles, and related laws/ordinances.
  • Effective communication and enforcement of building codes with professionalism and tact.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and leadership abilities, including reviewing and delegating work.
  • Proficient in office equipment, permit tracking systems, and cloud-based software applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals, city officials, and the public.
  • Commitment to ethical behavior, integrity, and compliance with city policies.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and perform mathematical calculations.

Physical & Work Requirements:
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are required.
  • Active role involving standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and occasional lifting (up to 20 lbs.).
  • Possible exposure to noise, odors, adverse weather, and hazardous construction sites.
