As a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst, Sr. within ASU's Global Futures Laboratory, you will play a pivotal role in informing strategy, aiding the next generation of changemakers, and supporting the future of our planet. Leveraging data analytics and innovative business intelligence solutions, you will provide critical insights that drive strategic decision-making and transformative initiatives. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, you will support the laboratory's mission to create scalable solutions for a sustainable future by analyzing complex data sets, identifying trends, interpreting data, and delivering actionable recommendations.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in data analysis, management, visualization, and other aspects of the data lifecycle. Your primary responsibility will be to assist executive leadership in fostering a data-driven decision-making culture and transforming data into insights that help shape strategy and objectives. Duties include data extraction, collation, analysis, and creating presentation reports related to performance indicators and assessments of academic programs, student success, research outcomes and more.

This position is critical, as it provides support through the design, development, and maintenance of various dashboards, investigating business software, automating data imports, and developing and managing systems. A key skill and ability required for this role is to review and analyze research data, identify patterns, translate and organize the data into easily digestible applications for use by staff and leadership. You will work to translate critical requirements into technical solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in a business, information technology or closely related field and four (4) years of experience in data modeling or database design using SQL or similar language, BI tool use and administration as well as user training/documentation development experience , OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with data tools such as Tableau, Alteryx, Report Builder, Power BI, SPSS, Toad Data Point, DataStage, SSIS, Dataverse, Brio, Hyperion, Python, Excel, or R; and experience writing advanced SQL or other querying languages to create data sets.
  • Knowledge of data sources relating to institutional research and planning.
  • Experience leading projects and initiatives.
  • Experience analyzing higher education student data.
  • Experience analyzing higher education human resources data.
  • Experience following reporting requirements of intense complexity and nuance.
  • Experience managing databases and creating enriched datasets.
  • Experience in displaying complex quantitative data in simple, intuitive formats and to present findings in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience with (and interest in) creating new analytics processes, reporting visuals and dashboards.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and translate them to mathematical/statistical questions/hypotheses that can be answered through analytics that deliver actionable insights to business partners.
  • General awareness of principles, concepts and current practices in university enrollment management, student data, university governance, research reporting, institutional assessment, and strategic planning.
  • Confidence in writing, interpreting, and delivering reports, and operating effectively within a diverse team of faculty members and staff.
  • Comfort with handling a variety of information, analysis, and report or visualization requests, including institutional research and evaluation; needs assessment projects; student enrollment and demographics analyses; research proposals, awards, and expenditures; program outcomes; and other performance indicators.
  • Knowledge of higher education processes.
  • Experience in translating business questions and requirements into reports, views, and BI data products.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Business Intelligence tool architectures, functions, and features.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of developing queries for reporting and analysis.
  • Passion for making ambiguous, large datasets clear and defined, and turning data into insights that help to advance the organizational mission.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.

Essential Duties

  • Generate insights and recommendations to assist decision-making across ASU's Global Futures Laboratory.
  • Create and enhance reports and dashboards using business intelligence tools, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and clarity in data presentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and provide analytical support for various Global Futures Laboratory initiatives and monthly reporting.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear and compelling narratives for non-technical audiences.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of data models to support business intelligence and reporting needs.
  • Highlight performance, risks, and opportunities through data analysis and modeling to support action plan development for annual and longer-range objectives.
  • Facilitate data-driven decisions and provide recommendations to leadership during meetings and strategy sessions.
  • Identify and assess potential data sources across the university, gathering information and creating reports based on research and analysis.
  • Participate in system administration functions, ensuring data integrity and security.
  • Represent GFL on committees to monitor and improve university data to meet institutional needs. Foster a collaborative and communicative environment, providing support and training to end-users as needed.
