JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Civil Division Chief, responsible for directing the civil prosecution of legal cases for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS). Supervises attorneys and legal assistants within the Family Justice Division of the Williamson County Attorney's Office and provides training and education on any legislative changes and relevant amendments affecting the division.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Civil Division Chief, responsible for directing the civil prosecution of legal cases for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS). Supervises attorneys and legal assistants within the Family Justice Division of the Williamson County Attorney's Office and provides training and education on any legislative changes and relevant amendments affecting the division.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Prepares and executes civil prosecution of legal cases for TDFPS
- Communicates frequently with TDFPS regarding any pertinent legislative changes
- Provides court representation for TDFPS at hearings and trials; provides legal advice/guidance, prosecution/trial preparation assistance, and instruction related to family law, civil litigation, and agency policy
- Assists in drafting and reviewing pleadings, motions, orders, discovery documents, and other legal instruments
- Supervises and assists in mediations when necessary
- Provides training to law enforcement and external agencies that the division works with, as requested/needed by the outside agency and upon approval by the Civil Division Chief
- Assists a Criminal Division Director with the representation by the State on behalf of victims of family violence seeking Protective Orders, including applications for Protective Orders through final order
- Consults with and assists Juvenile Division on dual status cases and other juvenile cases with a child protection element
- Maintains responsibility for periodic representation of Adult Protective Services/The Department of Aging and Disability Services in seeking guardianship and/or emergency protection of elderly or disabled adults
- Seeks out any educational training, Continuing Legal Education (CLEs), and other professional development opportunities that are relevant and beneficial to the family justice attorneys and submits to the Civil Division Chief for approval
- Staffs complex cases and issues collaboratively with the Civil Division Chief
- Communicates frequently with other departmental staff, State agencies, other county and district attorneys, outside attorneys, Judges and court personnel, community professionals, expert witnesses, community advocacy groups, inter-agency coordination groups, and the general public
- Supervises and directs proper legal decisions regarding the appropriate disposition of cases as outlined by the TDFPS
- Provides training and assistance to the family justice attorneys on screening new intake cases from TDFPS, ensures each attorney is responsible for a manageable and evenly distributed intake caseload
- Maintains an internal system for rotating the "on-call" phone for each family justice attorney to field intake calls after business hours and on weekends and holidays; serves as an "on-call" resource to family justice attorneys who are fielding intake calls
- Collaborates with the Civil Division Chief to address and problem solve appellate, policy, and TDFPS issues
- Works with community agencies to provide trainings and information as approved by the Civil Division Chief
- Serves as representative of the County Attorney's office on various committees and community groups related to child protection
- Attends all meetings and trainings, as required
- Performs special duties as assigned
