Summary of Position

The Calgary Zone Medical Director is integral to the successful implementation of the Calgary Zone Service Plan objectives, as a co-chair of the Zone Operations Coordinating Committee (ZOCC). This strategic leadership role in ZOCC supports delivery of the Zone Service Plan through clinical oversight of the designated Zonal Task Groups, as directed by the Zone Governance model.

In addition to this work, the Medical Director supports Calgary Zone priorities in several ways, including but not limited to, representing the Zone at meetings, conferences, on webinars, and through supporting other communications initiatives. This position acts as the representative for all the medical directors in the Zone, and is the dyad partner to the Zone Operations Director.

This position is part time, at 0.3 FTE.

Responsibilities:
  • Co-leads the Zone Operations Coordinating Committee, Calgary Zone, as one of three Co-Chairs, alongside the Executive Director Co-Chair and an AHS Co-Chair.
  • Appropriately escalates barriers or challenges to the achievement of the deliverables through the Calgary Zone primary care governance model.
  • Attends Co-Chair meetings as the PCN medical lead.
  • Supports Calgary Zone communications activities including, but not limited to, the Calgary Zone PCN webinar, Zone newsletters and physician Q&As.
  • Creates alignment amongst primary care medical leaders in Calgary zone, which includes chairing the monthly Calgary Zone Medical Director meetings
  • Attends external meetings, as appropriate, representing Calgary Zone PCNs
  • Provides clinical leadership to Calgary Zone Business Unit
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Must be a family physician, with a practice in the community in the Calgary area
  • Current or previous experience in physician leadership roles, including PCN Medical Director, PCN Board member, or similar (within the last 5 years)
  • Must be a member in good standing with the CPSA
  • Must be able to attend Friday morning co-chair meetings (twice per month), Wednesday morning PCN Council/Committee meetings (once per month), Tuesday evening Calgary Zone Medical Director meetings (bimonthly), and Tuesday afternoon ZOCC meetings (monthly), and other meetings as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Systems thinking: The Zone Medical Director is able to understand the primary care role and the opportunities within the broader health system to forward our Zone goals. The Zone Medical Director is able to work closely with and stay abreast of the work of multiple stakeholders to inform the Zone's work. Preference for candidates who have experience with both governance and operational leadership.
  • Credibility: The Zone Medical Director must be able to respectfully develop relationships with physician colleagues and operational leaders in both primary care and the broader health system, which includes AHS leadership. They have demonstrated ability and success in implementing the practice changes delivered from our Zone work and in the realm of Patients' Medical Home, and building alignment across system partners and stakeholders
  • Engagement and Change Management: The Zone Medical Director must have the ability to lead change management initiatives, use evidence in decision making, and engage with various stakeholders to drive strategic change in primary care.
  • Communication skills: The Zone Medical Director must have strong communication skills, and can communicate their experiences and insights while articulating the vision for Primary Care at the systems level, across the different buckets of work under ZOCC. This competency should also include the ability and comfort to engage in crucial conversations that ensure that primary care is accurately represented and seen as a true partner in system co design. Public speaking is also an asset.
  • Facilitation skills: The Zone Medical Director is able to structure meetings and engagement sessions to ensure that the objectives are met.
  • Leading and coaching skills: The successful candidate will also be responsible for the supervision and management of other medical leaders (eg. Task group chairs) within the Zone, and will have input into succession planning and other clinical administrative matters

Reporting/Supervision:

This position reports to the co-chairs of the Calgary Zone PCN Committee (PCN Physician Lead and AHS Medical Leader). Performance will also be managed by the co-chairs of the Calgary Zone PCN Committee, with input from the medical directors of all the Calgary Zone PCNs.

The Medical Director will be employed by one of the Calgary Zone Primary Care Networks (PCNs). The Calgary Zone Business Unit serves all seven Calgary and area PCNs. As per the governance structure of the Zone, performance management is through the Zone PCN Committee co-chairs.

Term:

This position has a two-year term, with the option to renew once, with the potential for second renewal subject to approval.

Working conditions:

This position is based remotely but will require regular travel within Calgary and area.
