ABOUT THIS POSITION:

WORK LOCATION: 105-B Upchurch Street, Apex, NC 27502 USA

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm, Office and Field. Some evening, nights, and weekends.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Performs responsible technical work in interpretation and enforcement of construction codes through inspections of infrastructure for the Town's capital improvement projects and residential and commercial developments. An employee in this class performs construction inspections of water and sewer lines, streets, sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm drainage, erosion control measures, and related items for Town capital improvement projects and may serve in a lead role with other inspectors. Work includes training of new inspectors; reviewing construction plans; meeting with contractors to review specifications and requirements; keeping track of pay items and quantities to ensure Town projects are within budget; recommending design changes and approving change orders on Town projects and inspecting construction in progress and upon completion for adherence to approved plans and specifications. Work may subject the employee to environmental conditions including working in both inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and construction noise and hazards. Work is performed under general supervision of the Infrastructure Inspections Supervisor and is evaluated based on conferences, review of records, and adherence of work inspected to adopted plans and specifications.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:
  • Reviews plans and construction drawings for adherence to construction codes and engineering specifications; approves minor revisions to plans; recommends design changes on Town projects; estimates quantities during the design phase of Town projects; and inspects for deviations and errors and assures conformance to codes.
  • Conducting start of warranty and end of warranty inspections on all greenways with Parks & Rec Dept.
  • Inspects construction work in progress and upon completion for quality of work and adherence to approved plans and specifications; verifies construction materials; interprets results of soils and material testing; and ensures engineer certifications before Town acceptance of projects.
  • Works with other Town departments to ensure Capital Projects (greenways, roads, sidewalks, etc.) are constructed to Town standards and specifications.
  • Completes field paperwork as required for Capital Projects to secure funding for projects.
  • Coordinates final inspections and notifies other Town departments.
  • Corresponds with developers, engineers, and others regarding deficiencies in plans and specifications based on consistency with Town needs and specifications.
  • Conducts pre-construction meetings; meets with contractors, engineers, owners, project managers and architects and reviews and explains construction requirements; meets with residents/business owners for Town project coordination of disruptions (i.e. driveway closures, water shutdowns, etc.); and provides updates on status of Town acceptance of public works facilities and infrastructure.
  • Assists with receiving and disbursement of financial guarantees for residential and commercial projects; reviews pay applications and change order work on Town projects.
  • Maintains log and records work activities and field findings, including extensive record keeping on federal
    funded Town projects; insures that as-builts are submitted upon completion of project; verifies as-builts based on field records; and indicates recommendation for acceptance of new lines and systems.
  • Answers public inquiries and complaints concerning streets, driveways, stormwater, grading and water and sewer projects.
  • Assigns work to other inspectors in the absence of the Infrastructure Inspector Supervisor; provides training; assures consistency of work; and assists in unusual and difficult construction situations.
  • Attends classes to increase knowledge and maintain certifications.
  • Assists other departments with various job duty needs as requested.
  • Performs related duties as required.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Graduation from a two-year technical school or community college with a major in civil engineering, drafting, design, or related field, and considerable construction or engineering inspections experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
