Position Information
Under general direction, manages one or more units of a Bureau with responsibility for programs, budget, staff assignments and personnel issues; and performs related work as assigned.
This is a DEPARTMENT PROMOTIONAL only recruitment being conducted to create a list for future vacancies. Only those applicants currently working in the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) in the classified service for at least six months are eligible to apply. Unclassified Appointees are not eligible for this promotional exam.
Note: The current list for Captain will remain in effect until a new list is established from this recruitment. The appointing authority has the right to select any eligible candidate from the qualifying list based on the Merit principles and processes and the operational needs of the agency.

Minimum Qualifications
Ten years of full-time paid public law enforcement experience, including one year as a Lieutenant with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).
License Or Certificate
  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of application and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • A Nevada Management P.O.S.T. Certificate is required within one year of appointment.
  • Required to maintain Basic P.O.S.T Certificate as Category I Police Officer per NRS/NAC289 for continued employment in this classification.
  • Required to complete P.O.S.T continuing education requirements in accordance with NRS/NAC 289 for continued employment in this classification.
  • Required to be Patrol Certified as defined in WCSO Policies and Procedures at the time of application for assignments in Operations.

Conditions of Employment
The Washoe County Sheriff's Supervisory Deputies Association (WCSSDA) covers the Captain position.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

What Happens Next

2. If you have met the minimum requirements, you will receive an additional email inviting you to attend the Captain Assessment Center.
The tentative date for the Assessment Center is the week of April 21, 2025. The exact day and time for the Assessment Center will be sent with your invitation.
The Assessment Center will consist of a variety of assessment exercises designed to allow candidates the opportunity to demonstrate, under standardized conditions, the entry level knowledge, skills and abilities most essential for success as a Captain with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
3. After the exam is completed, you will receive an additional email notifying you of the results. If you pass the examination, you will receive your score and rank.
