Job Overview

The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a Materials Performance Researcher to serve as a Materials Research Engineer in the Ceramics Branch of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic and Materials Performance Division. This post closes on 21 August 2024.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs materials engineering research and development involving the generation and/or application of theories, principles, processes, computer models, testing and experimentation, and practical concepts related to structural mechanics of materials and material behavior in extreme environments
  • Plans and conducts research on structural performance and life prediction of ceramic matrix composites in extreme environmental applications such as space environments.
  • Performs research to evaluate thermal, electromagnetic, and chemical environmental effects through the creation of computational models and simulations and use of experimental testing methods to replicate extreme environmental effects to validate models
  • Works both independently and as part of a team of researchers and program managers to develop new models and characterization tools
  • Interacts with and develops collaborations with industrial, academic, and other government agency partners to perform research and technology transition partnerships
  • Disseminates research findings through technical publications such as journal articles and internal reports and presentations to a wide variety of internal and external technical audiences

This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to convert to a permanent appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Possess a professional science & engineering or mathematics degree, in a relevant technical field, from an (ABET) accredited academic institution; if the highest earned S&E degree is a Bachelor's, the applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) level.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (Note: this is part of the onboard process after hiring selection).
  • This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level 1 or II certification in the Science and Technology Manager (N) functional stall. Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on their resume.
  • Selectee will have 24 months to meet the APDP certification requirements for the position.

Desired Qualifications

  • Possess an advanced professional engineering or mathematics degree at the PhD level, in a relevant technical field (materials, chemical, mechanical, aerospace, or other engineering related fields, or mathematics), from an ABET accredited academic institution
  • Interest and/or expertise in ceramic matrix composite structural mechanics, thermal, environmental performance in extreme environments
  • Demonstrated ability to perform materials science research both independently and in collaboration with other researchers
  • Experience in computational modeling to predict material behavior, or willingness to grow competency in modeling and/or testing of materials in extreme environments to validate models
  • Experience with the space environment, including challenges with extreme heat and cold fluctuations, atomic oxygen, high energy radiation and debris impact, or willingness to grow expertise in space environmental effects of material performance.
